Magnus Leadership Awards

The Magnus Leadership Awards program recognizes the leadership, impact, and service Muskingum University students have on the campus and local community.

In addition to receiving recognition at the Magnus Leadership Awards program, the following awards will be recognized on April 5: The Emerging Leader Award, The Muskie Service Impact Award, The Student Leader of Year Award, The Unsung Hero Award, The Muskie of the year Award, and Student Committed to Diversity and Inclusion. All other award recipients will receive recognition on April 23 at the Magnus Leadership Awards program.

The Emerging Leader Award


The Emerging Leader Award is presented to a first- or second-year student who has contributed significantly to the community through their involvement in a campus organization, athletic team, residential community, or a community service program. The nominee must also show significant potential for continued leadership.


Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must show potential for continued leadership within the campus community
•    Nominee must contribute positively to the campus community by supporting the mission of the university
•    Nominee must have co-curricular experiences 
•    Nominee must demonstrate growth and development as an emerging leader
•    Nominee must show initiative and integrity
•    Nominee must show the willingness and ability to work with others

The Muskie Impact Service Award

The Muskie Impact Service Award was developed to honor a student who is making significant contributions to their community through their time, actions, talents and dedication.  The honoree selected should serve as a role model for compassion, and service and be striving to make the world a better place. They should have a passion for helping others in their community.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    The service provided by the nominee must be voluntary, non-compensated activities at the university, or in the Muskingum/Guernsey County community
•    The nominee must make service a priority, and has made an impact on the campus community through service.
•    The nominee must be sensitive to human need
•    The nominee must demonstrate a consistent commitment to the community beyond a singular occasion

The Student Leader of the Year Award


The Student Leader of the Year award recognizes an upper-class student who has shown outstanding leadership during their Muskingum University experience. This student will have demonstrated a commitment to creating positive change in our campus community. 


Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    The nominee must be at least a Junior or Senior
•    Nominee must improve the quality of the organization(s) in which they have been involved
•    Nominee must contribute significantly to campus organization(s) and campus community as a whole  
•    Nominee must demonstrate a commitment to the goals of their organization(s) 
•    Nominee must exhibit individual leadership
•    Nominee must work to motivate the actions and ideas of the organization to better the University community

The Unsung Hero Award


This award recognizes a student who works behind-the-scenes of a successful recognized student organization, athletic team, group, or residential community. This award is given to a student who consistently gives their all, going above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis without expectation of recognition.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must work outside the scope of any formal position they may hold
•    Nominee must demonstrate a strong commitment to the organization, team, group, or residential community
•    Nominee must positively influences the community and campus from behind the scenes
•    Nominee must have a strong attendance record at organization meetings and events
•    Nominee must complete tasks and duties in a timely manner with a high level of quality

The Muskie of the Year Award


This award recognizes a student who has demonstrated excellence in academic growth and achievement, as well as excellence in campus and community engagement and has contributed to the Muskingum University community through their leadership and participation in campus programs, organizations, and activities.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
•    Nominee must be in good conduct standing during throughout their undergraduate experience
•    Nominee must hold a leadership position on campus in a recognized student organization, athletic team, residence hall or through student employment
•    Nominee must have made a significant contribution to the Muskingum’s campus community while upholding and advancing our core values and the university’s mission
•    Nominee must demonstrate the ability to prepare, motivate, and influence other students
•    Nominee must maintain a positive image and presence within the community

The Student Committed to Diversity and Inclusion Award

Student nominees will be evaluated based on their demonstrated commitment over time to the principles and ideals of diversity and inclusion. 

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must advance diversity awareness, knowledge, and skills within the community
•    Nominee must serve as an advocate for the interests of under-represented populations
•    Nominee must participate in and/or leads educational or activist programs/events on campus or in the community
•    Nominee must have a commitment to making the Muskingum University  community a welcoming and positive environment for all

The Campus Program of the Year Award


This award recognizes innovative and outstanding achievement in the planning and presentation of a program by a student organization, resident assistant, or individual.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    The campus program must be a campus program where students were significantly involved with the decision-making, planning, implementation and presentation of program
•    The campus program must be a campus program that had visibility through promotion and marketing to the campus community
•    The campus program must be a campus program with creativity and impact on the campus and/or local community. (Consideration will be given to those programs that reached a diverse audience)
•    The campus program must be a campus program with effective and appropriate use of university resources
•    The campus program must not  be the recipient of academic credit or course work

The Outstanding Student Organization Award


The Outstanding Student Organization award is presented to an organization that has made a significant effort to further its purpose through its contribution to Muskingum University and the greater New Concord community. 

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s mission statement through measureable action
•    Nominee must demonstrates flexibility, initiative, creativity, and perseverance through their activities and programs
•    Nominee must embody the Muskie spirit through its commitment to leadership development, collaboration among groups, and programmatic efforts to enhance the quality of campus life at Muskingum University
•    Nominee must be considered a role model for other organizations on our campus

The Outstanding Fraternity or Sorority Award


The chapter receiving this award exemplifies the core values of the Muskingum University’s Greek Community Statement: Leadership, Scholarship, and Service.  They have gone above and beyond the minimum standards set for them and have excelled in a variety of areas throughout the university community.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must be in good conduct standing with the University for both the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019. 
•    Nominee must demonstrate efforts toward Risk Management: Chapter provides safe living and learning environments for its members. 
•    Nominee must have chapter grade point average above all Greek average. 
•    Nominee must demonstrate emphasis on academic improvement and/or success. 
•    Nominee must have chapter members have participate in leadership development opportunities on and off campus
•    Nominee must demonstrate efforts towards Community Service: Chapter provides unique and ongoing service opportunities for its members. 
•    Nominee must participate in campus activities (Homecoming, Involvement Fair, Brewed Awakenings, etc.)

The East Hill Resident Assistant of the Year Award


The East Hill Resident Assistant of the Year award is given to ta Resident Assistant who has demonstrated exceptional contributions to their residential community through program development, addressing student needs, supporting residents, and leadership through crisis response. 

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must work  to support residents in the communities in which they work 
•    Nominees must go above and beyond to perform the duties as outlined in their job description
•    Nominee must exhibit exemplary leadership skills during times of conflict, confrontation, and/or crisis

The West Hill Resident Assistant of the Year Award


The West Hill Resident Assistant of the Year award is given to ta Resident Assistant who has demonstrated exceptional contributions to their residential community through program development, addressing student needs, supporting residents, and leadership through crisis response. 

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must work  to support residents in the communities in which they work 
•    Nominees must go above and beyond to perform the duties as outlined in their job description
•    Nominee must exhibit exemplary leadership skills during times of conflict, confrontation, and/or crisis

The Greek Member of the Year Award

The nominee will be a member of a fraternity or sorority who upholds the values of the Muskingum University Greek Community. This person should be someone who worked to move the Greek community forward and left a positive impact on the community this past academic year. 

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must uphold and exemplify the common values of the Fraternity and Sorority Community (scholarship, leadership, and service)
•    Nominee must have a cumulative GPA above the All Campus GPA of a 2.9
•    Nominee must hold a leadership or committee chair role within their fraternity or sorority, Greek Council, or Order of Omega
•    Nominee must participate in community service initiatives within the Muskingum and Guernsey County
•    Nominee must work to unify the community while appreciating the individual differences of chapters

The Recreation Staff Member of the Year Award

The Recreation Staff Member of the Year Award is presented to a student who has contributed significantly to the recreation community through their work both voluntary and as part of their position within campus recreation.  The nominee also shows high levels of sportsmanship and respect for others in the work that they do within campus recreation.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must have a position within campus recreation (Chess Center or Intramural Staff)
•    Nominee must contribute positively to the recreation community by supporting the mission of the university and of Intramurals and/or the Chess Center
•    Nominee must demonstrate growth and development within their position
•    Nominee must have a positive impact on campus recreation
•    Nominee must show the willingness and ability to work with others
•    Nominee must show a passion for their work within campus recreation

The Intramural Referee of the Year Award


The Intramural Referee of the Year Award is presented to a student who has served within the referee position with Intramurals.  The nominee should be seen as a member who meets and exceeds expectations of the position.  The nominee also shows high levels of sportsmanship and respect for others in the work that they do within campus recreation.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must contribute positively to the recreation community through their work as a referee
•    Nominee must have a high level of consistency within their work as a referee
•    Nominee must show the highest level of integrity within their position
•    Nominee must show the willingness and ability to work with others
•    Nominee must have refereed for at least two different sports within Intramurals

The Staff Member of the Year Award


The Staff Member of the Year award is presented to a non-faculty member who has gone above and beyond their role at the University to support student organizations, athletics, or other events.  This staff member may also serve as an advisor to a student organization.


Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must demonstrate commitment to a student organization, athletic team, or event
•    Nominee must shows initiative in creating a better Muskingum experience for students
•    Nominee must show a commitment to educating the whole student for the whole world
•    Nominee must exemplifies the Spirit of Muskingum

The Student Organization Advisor of the Year Award

This award recognizes a faculty or staff member who advises a student organization. This person embodies the ideals of working with a dedicated group of students. They work to support student efforts while advancing the mission of the institution.  Advisors who may advise a student organization as a condition of their job is not eligible for this award.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
•    Nominee must display a commitment to furthering the goals of the organization through excellent guidance and advice
•    Nominee must play an active role in the organization through participation in meetings, events and organization efforts
•    Nominee must allow students to take responsibility for their own learning and understanding of the organization, while providing advice, encouragement, and support to all students
•    Nominee must relate well to individual students, values initiative and student input, and is approachable and open to new ideas
•    Nominee must utilize different and creative approaches to educating and assisting members
•    Nominee must serve as a positive role model

The 1837 Challenge Award


The "1837 Challenge" is an intentional effort to both challenge and recognize departments, groups, and student organizations who have completed 1,837 community service hours as a group. Those who accomplish this challenge will receive the 1837 Challenge Award.
