Custodian

Muskingum University invites applications for two Custodians, who will be assigned to the 7:00 a.m. shift.  Under the supervision of the Custodial Shift Supervisor, this role is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment across university facilities. The Custodian follows established cleaning schedules and procedures to ensure university properties are clean, neat, and well maintained.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Dust mop, sweep, wet mop, and spray-buff floors. 
  • Vacuum and clean rugs and carpets. 
  • Scrub floors with machines. 
  • Scrub and clean restroom fixtures; keep restrooms supplied with towels, soap and other appropriate items. 
  • Dust and clean walls, doors, windows, woodwork, and other above-floor surfaces. 
  • Clean elevators, stairwells, and outside entrances. 
  • Keep records and make reports as instructed by Custodial Team Leader. 
  • Notify Custodial Team Leader of equipment and facilities needing repair or replacement. 
  • Replace accessible light bulbs. 
  • Collect and dispose of trash. 
  • Lock and unlock buildings and doors as directed. 
  • Communicate to Team Leader any potential safety or mechanical hazards observed. 
  • Maintain supply closet and inventory. 
  • Supervise student helpers as assigned.  Assign tasks, monitor work, provide feedback and evaluate work. 
  • Vacuum furniture and drapes. 
  • Wash waste receptacles. 
  • Shovel and remove snow. 
  • Event set-ups as required, assist in moving tents, stage, tables, chairs, etc.
  • Strip and refinish floors. 
  • Wash walls, vents and radiators. 
  • Wash and vacuum light fixtures. 
  • Shampoo carpets.

 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  • Ability to perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength including ability to move ladders, mop buckets, and furniture. 
  • Knowledge of safe cleaning methods, materials, and equipment. 
  • Ability to operate mechanical cleaning equipment. 
  • Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions in the performance of job responsibilities.   
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relations with supervisors, co-workers, employees, and students. 
  • Ability to use cleaning equipment and machines and to lift ladders and equipment. 
  • Must have and maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license and be insurable through the University’s carrier.
