Muskingum University offers a generous leave package to help employees achieve a strong work-life balance while sustaining the University’s mission.
This page provides a summary of the University’s leave program. The terms of each leave type depend upon an each employee's position classification.. Therefore, employees are encouraged to review the Employee Handbook for more information about the specific leave types available to them and for additional information about each, specific leave type.
Faculty generally follow recesses announced on the University’s Academic Calendar. Some leave types, however, also apply to Faculty, who should consult the Faculty Handbook, the Employee Handbook, or the Human Resources Office if they have questions about leave.

Unless their position description follows the academic calendar of leave, employees who are classified as Administrators, Administrators with Faculty Status, or Support Staff and who are regularly scheduled to work at least 30 hours per week are provided paid vacation leave according to the following chart. Employees are encouraged to review the Employee Handbook for specific information about this leave type.

Each June 30, an employee may carry forward up to 40 hours of unused vacation leave into the next fiscal year. Vacation leave for new employees is pro-rated based on start date. Employees who separate from service will be paid out for unused vacation leave, which is calculated as the amount of time they would have accrued between July 1 and their termination date, minus vacation leave used.

Each June 30, Muskingum will retain any unused sick leave time in a reserve sick leave bank, which may not exceed a total of 240 hours. The reserve sick leave bank may be used for salary continuity during qualifying FMLA leave or as an employee transitions to long-term disability insurance. Sick leave for new employees is pro-rated based on start date. Employees who separate from service will not be paid for any unused regular or reserve bank sick leave.
- Personal Days

Full-time and part-time Administrators, Administrators with Faculty Status, and Support Staff are credited with two personal days each fiscal year. New employees are credited with two personal days upon hire. Unused personal leave is not paid upon separation from employment.
- Military Leave

The University complies with all requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). In order to preserve one’s rights under that Act, a staff or faculty member who enlists in, is inducted into or is ordered to active duty in one of the uniformed services must give the University reasonable advance notice of the need for such leave, unless military necessity or other relevant circumstances make the giving of that reasonable advance notice impossible or unreasonable. - Bereavement Leave

Full-time employees are granted bereavement leave of up to three days, depending on the employee’s relationship to the deceased. More information is available in the Employee Handbook.
- Voting

The University provides employees a reasonable amount of time off so they may vote. Employees should make every effort to vote either before or after normal working hours due to extended polling hours.
- Jury or Witness Duty

The University recognizes the responsibility of employees to serve jury duty. No employee will lose regular compensation or benefits when called for jury duty or to provide testimony pursuant to the order of a court or other regulatory agency or at the request of the University.
