About Adolescent and Young Adult Education

Adolescent and Young Adult Education prepares individuals to tech grades seven through twelve (ages 12-21). Licensure area options are integrated language arts, integrated mathematics, integrated science, integrated social studies, earth sciences, life sciences, physical sciences: chemistry and physical sciences: physics.

  • Those seeking Adolescent to Young Adult (AYA) Licensure have two advisors – one in education and one in the major area of study.
  • Completion of a disciplinary major that is a part of one of the adolescent/young adult licensure areas.

Classes in education are held in the Roberta A. Smith University Library classrooms, equipped as “smart classrooms” with Internet, SmartPodium or a mobile KAP IQ Smart Board and computer-display capabilities. The Muskingum Department of Education has iPads, laptops and handheld devices that are available for student and faculty use in education classrooms with wireless connectivity. Other departments throughout the University provide the language labs, science labs, and other facilities necessary to train candidates to become teachers in public schools. These resources are designed to ensure that teacher candidates are able to incorporate technology effectively to enhance instruction and student learning.


The mission of the Muskingum University Undergraduate Initial Teacher Licensure Preparation Program is to develop teacher-leaders who encourage, equip and empower all students.

The philosophy and purpose that the Undergraduate Initial Teacher Preparation Program and Graduate Initial Teacher Preparation Program use to articulate this mission closely align with the University’s mission statement. The philosophy is grounded in the commitment to help candidates develop intellectually, ethically, socially, and physically. The purpose of the program is to nurture candidates into becoming educators who in turn nurture their students to their fullest potential by

  • encouraging their efforts, increasing motivation;
  • equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need in order to be successful, professionally and personally; and
  • empowering them to become active participants their own professions, families, and communities.
