Majors/Minors

The art curriculum at Muskingum University encourages the development of creative, skilled, and thoughtful artists and educators. Students explore their creative potentials while gaining the technical skills and critical thinking abilities necessary for success in the art world and beyond. The program is distinguished by its blend of traditional art forms with contemporary digital practices, ensuring students are well-prepared to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of art and design.

Art Major/Minor

The Bachelor of Arts in Art requires students to complete foundational courses in drawing, art history, and graphic design, along with specialized courses in their chosen area of focus: two-dimensional, three-dimensional, digital, or theatre art and design. Graduates with a major in art are well-equipped for a variety of careers, including professional artists, graphic designers, or roles in museum and gallery management.

Major Requirements

The minor in Art allows students to gain a solid foundation in art and design, offering flexibility to explore various mediums and techniques. The minor complements a wide range of areas of study, enriching students’ academic experiences and broadening their creative and analytical skills.

With the addition of EDUC 315: The Arts in Early Childhood, an Art minor can serve as a concentration within the Early Childhood Education major.

Art Education Major

The Bachelor of Arts in Art Education degree equips students with the pedagogical skills and artistic knowledge required for teaching art from Pre-K through grade 12. The program combines foundational art courses with a comprehensive set of educational strategies and practices, preparing students for licensure and careers in teaching art across various educational settings. In addition, the program allows students to tailor the curriculum to meet their individual interests and career goals.

Major Requirements

In addition to the Art and Art Education majors, interested students can create a wide range of professional opportunities by combining an art major or minor with a second major or minor offered at Muskingum.

  • Arts Management: Students interested in working in community-based arts organizations, nonprofit cultural institutions, and/or public arts agencies should pursue one of the following:
  • Art Therapy: Students interested in using art to address the needs of individuals in hospitals, nursing homes, and/or public schools should pursue one of the following before completing a master’s degree or equivalency program in art therapy:
