English Student Opportunities

Internships
Internships offer students supervised English-related work experience, such as in professional contexts involving editing and publication.

Research
Students may research a literary topic and submit their work to national or local conferences. Muskingum students have presented papers at both the Sigma Tau Delta (see below) and CEAO (College English Association of Ohio) conferences.

Honoraries
Qualified Muskingum University English majors may join Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honorary. Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Muskingum's is one of the oldest chapters in the nation and recently celebrated 75 years of membership.

First Circle
First Circle, a magazine dedicated to literature and the arts, is an annual student publication of Muskingum University, publishing the work of students, faculty, alumni, and others. First Circle, the organization, sponsors related campus events throughout the school year.

Career Possibilities for English Majors

Concentrated study in English can prepare a student for many different careers, as more and more employers look for job candidates with strong writing and communication skills. Traditionally, an education in English has led to success in the following fields:
