Counseling Services

Faculty & Staff Services

Faculty and staff play a vital role in student wellbeing. You're often the first to notice when something seems off — and your early attention can make a real difference. We're here to help you help Muskingum students.

Student in crisis? Connect them to our 24/7 confidential line: 1-866-743-7732. You can also walk them directly to our office in Montgomery Hall, Ground Floor, Suite 2.

Supporting students

What is my role when a student seems to be struggling?

You don't need to be a counselor to make a difference. Your role is to:

  • Notice: Pay attention to changes in attendance, academic performance, or demeanor
  • Listen: Offer a non-judgmental ear when a student reaches out to you
  • Connect: Help bridge the gap to professional resources when a student's needs go beyond your role
  • Attend How to Help a Student trainings.
    • This 60-minute interactive session is designed to equip faculty, staff, and administrators with the knowledge and tools to recognize when a student may be struggling, initiate supportive conversations, and connect students to appropriate resources. How do I approach a student I'm concerned about?

A few principles that help:

  • Be direct and specific: Name what you've observed — behaviors, not interpretations. "I've noticed you've missed several classes" is more helpful than "You seem off."
  • Respect their pace: Unless there's immediate danger, don't pressure. Validate their feelings and leave the door open if they're not ready to accept a referral.
  • Connect them to help: You can walk them to Counseling Services, share our contact information, or provide the 24/7 crisis line number: 1-866-743-7732.

A printable quick-reference guide is available through the Red Folder resource (attach PDF).

What behaviors should prompt a referral or report?

Trust your instincts. Some common signals to take seriously:

  • Outbursts or disruptions in class or meetings

  • Sudden loss of interest, engagement, or attendance

  • A noticeable drop in performance

  • A personal crisis disclosed to you — illness, loss, relationship issues

  • Changes in hygiene or personal care

If you're unsure whether to refer to Counseling Services, the Behavioral Assessment and Intervention Team (BAIT) is another option. You can submit a concern through  this form to alert BAIT. The BAIT report form is also available on Muskie Link. Reports concerning students are reviewed by BAIT, and other reports are referred to the appropriate staff for review.

Working with our office

Can I consult with Counseling Services about a student I'm worried about?

Yes — consultation is available to faculty, staff, and campus professionals. We can help you think through concerns about a specific student's wellbeing, behavioral issues in the classroom, or other situations with a psychological dimension. Reach out to us at any time during business hours (counseling services contact us page).

Can you share information about a student's counseling with me?

Due to legal and professional ethics requirements, we cannot share any confidential student information with faculty or staff — even with good intentions. Counseling records are only released with the student's written consent, in situations involving immediate danger, or when required by law.
