Chemistry Success Stories

Rachel Hankin ’22 has been accepted into the University of Georgia’s Integrated Life Sciences graduate program. Rachel was a double major in Molecular Biology and Chemistry, and took the additional coursework to earn the American Chemical Society certified degree-Biochemistry track. She won first place in the Anderson Poster Session in April of 2022 for her chemistry senior capstone research, as well as placing 1st at the Bradford Colloquium for her Molecular Biology research. She will be working as a graduate research assistant in Athens, GA.

Kathlyene Montgomery (Stone) ’21 is currently a Research Assistant II at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Katey was also a research intern at the Heart Center of Nationwide Children’s Hospital Abigail Wexner Research Institute. One of her projects there led to a first author abstract published in Experimental Biology 2020 and a featured talk at the journal’s annual conference.

Kilie Rock ’21 just completed her first year of dental school at Indiana University School of Dentistry. Kilie was a Chemistry and Biology double-major with minors in math and philosophy. Kilie was a COF Scholar, ACS Member, and Pre-Health Club Treasurer. She was also a chemistry and math tutor, as well as an SI Leader for the nursing chemistry course at Muskingum.

Ryan Burkhart ’20 finished his second year of dental school at The Ohio State University in May of 2022. While at Muskingum Ryan designed his senior capstone project to focus on a dentistry-related project – specifically to study zinc sequestration as a preventative measure for hypocupremia from denture fixative ingestion. In addition to chemistry, Ryan was very active in the music and theatre departments while at Muskingum, and is currently a member of the Millersport Community Theatre.

Stephanie Clark ’18 just completed medical school at the University of Toledo and is starting her residency at George Washington University in Washington D.C. At Muskingum Stephanie started working on a research project as a sophomore with Dr. Eric Schurter synthesizing and characterizing modified naphthalated lignin. During the summer of 2017 Stephanie worked as an intern in the Biochemistry and Solvents Group at the Miamisburg branch of MilliporeSigma. She also served the department as a stockroom worker and as a chemistry tutor in the Study Center.

Kimberly Holmes ’17 graduated from The Ohio State University’s dental school in 2021 and is now a Dentistry Practitioner in Whitehall, OH. As an undergraduate chemistry major at Muskingum, Kim served in a variety of roles in the following clubs and honoraries; Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Beta Beta, the American Chemical Society, the Pre-Health Club, and was President of the Class of 2017 (Student Senate). While a student at Muskingum, Kim spent the summer after her sophomore year working at OSU’s Center for Emergent Materials, and after graduation began work as a volunteer research assistant at OSU’s College of Dentistry prior to beginning her Doctor of Dental Surgery program.

Anna Mayo ’17 is going to be starting medical school at Marshall University in the fall of 2022. Anna worked as an R&D Chemist at Mylan Pharmaceutical and attended graduate school at Marshall University prior to being accepted into medical school. While at Muskingum, Anna spent a summer as a Muskie Fellow under the supervision of Dr. Deepa Perera studying mutations in calf thymus DNA in 2015. During the summer of 2016 Anna spent two months in Guam working in an infectious disease clinic.

Tyler Linn ’17 earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2021 at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Tyler worked as a pharmacist with Marcs Pharmacy for a little over a year before accepting a position as a Clinical Pharmacist at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio in May of 2022. Dr. Lynn returned to Muskingum in the spring of 2022 to give a talk to the chemistry department’s senior seminar students on his transition from chemistry student to pharmacist. While a student at Muskingum Tyler conducted research on the use of dendrimers for drug delivery applications, and as a result of his senior research efforts, won the department’s outstanding senior chemistry major award.
