Chemistry Success Stories

Kim Holmes '17 is currently attending dental school at The Ohio State University. As an undergraduate chemistry major at Muskingum, Kim served in a variety of roles in the following clubs and honoraries; Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Beta Beta, the American Chemical Society, the Pre-Health Club, and was President of the Class of 2017 (Student Senate). While a student at Muskingum, Kim spent the summer after her sophomore year working at OSU’s Center for Emergent Materials, and after graduation began work as a volunteer research assistant at OSU’s College of Dentistry prior to beginning her Doctor of Dental Surgery program.

Anna Mayo '17 is currently working at Mylan Pharmaceuticals in Morgantown, WV as a Research and Development Chemist. Anna is working to develop new HPLC methods to test the quality of Mylan’s generic drugs that are under development. While at Muskingum, Anna spent a summer as a Muskie Fellow under the supervision of Dr. Deepa Perera studying mutations in calf thymus DNA in 2015. During the summer of 2016 Anna spent two months in Guam working in an infectious disease clinic. Anna is currently considering applying to medical school in hopes of working in either the field of emergency medicine or infectious disease.

Tyler Lynn '17 was accepted early decision into North East Ohio Medical University’s College of Pharmacy during his senior year and is currently attending NEOMED to pursue his Doctor of Pharmacy degree. While a chemistry major at Muskingum, Tyler served as Vice President of the Pre-Health club and worked as a pharmacy technician at Kroger Pharmacy in Zanesville. Tyler conducted research on the use of dendrimers for drug delivery applications, and as a result of his senior research efforts, won the department’s outstanding senior chemistry major award.

Stephanie Clark '18 is currently a senior chemistry major who works in the chemistry stockroom and as a chemistry tutor in the Study Center. She completed an independent research project as a sophomore working with Dr. Eric Schurter synthesizing and characterizing modified naphthalated lignin. During the summer of 2017 Stephanie worked as an intern in the Biochemistry and Solvents Group at the Miamisburg branch of MilliporeSigma. Stephanie is currently applying to medical school and plans to become a family physician.

Nicole Carroll '15 recently started a new job working as a chemist at VEXOR Technology, Inc. in March of 2017. VEXOR Technology is a waste management company that focuses on environmentally sustainable waste-to-energy techniques. Prior to her move to VEXOR, Nicole was employed as a Hazard Communication Specialist for Lubrizol Corporation, a leader in specialty chemicals.

Jonathan Ray '14 started medical school at Marshall University’s School of Medicine in August of 2017. While at Muskingum, Jonathan won an award his senior year for his research on the development of Colorimetric and Fluorometric Assay Methods for Quantifying AP-Sites in DNA. After graduating with his chemistry degree in 2014, Jonathan immediately found employment as a laboratory technician at Colgate Palmolive. Jonathan then attended graduate school at Case Western Reserve where he received a master’s degree in Medical Physiology prior to being accepted to medical school.

Emily Bay '14 is currently finishing medical school at Northeastern Ohio Medical University. While at Muskingum, Emily served as President of the American Chemical Society, was secretary of the academic honorary Omicron Delta Kappa, and was a member of the biology honorary, Beta, Beta, Beta. Emily also spent the summer between her junior and senior year as an intern at the Akron Children’s Hospital where she performed clinical research in neonatology. While at NEOMED, Emily was awarded a Choose Ohio First Education for Service scholarship awarded to medical students committed to a career in primary care in the state of Ohio.
