Muskingum Athletics Joins Lt. Governor Jim Tressel to Inspire the Next Generation
Team Tressel Fitness Challenge

Excitement, energy, and a passion for healthy living filled the gymnasium at John McIntire Elementary School in Zanesville, Ohio, as Muskingum University Athletics teamed up with Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jim Tressel and the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge to deliver an unforgettable experience for local students.

The September 15 assembly brought together elementary students, Muskingum student-athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, and community leaders for a high-energy, interactive program focused on fitness, nutrition, goal setting, mental wellness, healthy sleep habits, and the power of gratitude. Adding to the excitement, Magnus the Mascot kept students smiling and engaged throughout the event.

Muskingum Athletics proudly joined Lt. Governor Tressel and former NFL and Ohio State standout DeVier Posey in encouraging students to embrace positive habits that can fuel success both in the classroom and in everyday life. The event also welcomed President Flavius Lilly, Muskingum Trustee Darrell Hazell ’86, and Zanesville Mayor Don Mason ’79. Their presence demonstrated the University’s strong commitment to community engagement, leadership development, and youth empowerment throughout the region.

One of the most inspiring moments of the day was the involvement of Muskingum student-athletes, who stepped into the roles of mentors and role models. Through exercise demonstrations, interactive activities, and personal connections with students, they showcased the tremendous influence collegiate athletes can have beyond competition. Their enthusiasm was contagious and served as a powerful reminder that leadership extends far beyond the playing field.

The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is a statewide initiative dedicated to helping students in grades 3 through 8 develop lifelong healthy habits through goal setting, accountability, and positive decision-making. By connecting young people with collegiate mentors, the program reinforces the importance of physical activity, proper nutrition, quality sleep, focus, resilience, and perseverance.

For Muskingum Athletics, this partnership represents far more than a single event. It reflects a broader commitment to making a meaningful impact throughout Muskingum County and beyond. Following the tremendous success of the John McIntire visit, Muskingum Athletics is excited to continue its involvement with the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge this fall, visiting eight additional elementary and middle schools and inspiring hundreds more students along the way.

Through partnerships like the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge, Muskingum Athletics continues to demonstrate that true success is measured not only by victories on the scoreboard but also by lives impacted, communities strengthened, and futures inspired. By empowering young people to dream big, stay healthy, and believe in their potential, the Fighting Muskies are helping shape the leaders of tomorrow.
