HISTORY
Professor of History Dr. Laura J. Hilton is commended for her leadership in Holocaust education through two impactful professional development events. She led a teacher training workshop entitled “Jewish Resistance & Rescue During the Holocaust” on Saturday, February 14 in Columbus, Ohio, organized by the Ohio Holocaust and Genocide Memorial and Education Commission for grades 7–12 English Language Arts and Social Studies educators, providing continuing education units for participants.
In addition, Dr. Hilton conducted a separate day-long workshop on teaching the Holocaust for more than 50 middle and high school teachers, in partnership with Congregation Beth Tikvah in Worthington, Ohio, equipping educators with essential knowledge and effective instructional strategies to bring Holocaust studies into their classrooms.
POLITICAL SCIENCE
Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Richard Arnold is recognized for a strong body of work on Russia, civil society, education, and the role of Cossacks in contemporary political life.
His publication, “Professor” Malofeev Underlines Fascistization of Russian Education, examines the growing ideological control of Russian education and the influence of ultraconservative figures in academia.
In Putin Furthers Civil Society Facade as Tool of Control, he analyzes how the Kremlin uses state-managed institutions to replace genuine civil society and maintain authoritarian oversight. His article Cossack Participation in Victory Day Parade Set to Increase explores the expanding public and symbolic role of Cossacks in state messaging and military pageantry.
In Genuine Russian Cossacks Fight for Ukraine Against Putin’s Regime, he highlights Cossacks who oppose the Kremlin and support Ukraine. Through Cossacks Continue International and Domestic Resurgence, he discusses the continued growth and visibility of Cossack identity in Russia and abroad.
Finally, Cossack Resilience in Face of Ukrainian Gains considers how Cossack formations are used to reinforce Kremlin narratives despite battlefield setbacks.
In the Radio Free Europe interview, “Unfair and Stupid: Russia Is Gradually Returning to World Sport”, Dr. Richard Arnold offered his commentary on Russia’s gradual reintegration into international sport and the political significance of that return.
