Juneteenth Celebration: Muskingum County & the Underground Railroad
Peter Cultice

Muskingum University celebrated Juneteenth, the federally-recognized holiday commemorating the emancipation day of enslaved people in the United States, on June 19, 2023.

President of the Muskingum County History Organization Peter Cultice presented on the important role the area played in the Underground Railroad. Regional Underground Railroad stations and centers of abolitionist activity included Zanesville’s Stone Academy Historic Site and Museum, which houses the Putnam Underground Railroad Interpretive Center featuring exhibits, a resource library, and on-going research activities.

The day’s events also included Juneteenth Bingo.

Muskingum’s celebration was sponsored by the University’s Office of Cultural Engagement and Inclusion.
