Celebrating May Commencement

Muskingum University held its May undergraduate and graduate Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 6 at the Steele Center.  Members of the Class of 2023 received Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in Teaching, and Master of Business Information Systems degrees.

Dr. Debu Purohit '83, the Ford Motor Company Distinguished Professor of Business Administration and the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, delivered the keynote address and received an honorary Muskingum Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the ceremony.

Dr.  Purohit noted that 40 years ago, he spoke to his own graduating class at Muskingum. “Life is lived forward, but it is only understood backwards,” he said. “My Muskingum professors continue to have an effect on how I view the world and what I do in the world. They gave me the courage to open doors – which is essential for living a meaningful life.”

The Class of 2023 celebration weekend began on Friday May 5 with a Champagne Toast and Dessert Bar, held on the Mezzanine of the Bullock Health and Wellness Complex. President Susan S. Hasseler toasted the graduates on behalf of the University’s community of educators.

Saturday’s Commencement ceremony was preceded by the traditional morning Baccalaureate Service in Brown Chapel and by a Master’s Degree Hooding ceremony in the library’s McCalmont Colloquium Center. It was followed by the Nursing Pinning ceremony in Brown Chapel.
