FAQS

Program Format & Flexibility

Is Muskingum’s MSN program fully online?

Yes. Muskingum University’s MSN in Nursing Leadership & Education coursework is delivered 100% online, with no required campus visits.

Courses are offered in flexible 8-week sessions, allowing you to complete your coursework on your schedule. Your required internship experiences are completed in your local community—whether you’re based in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, or beyond—so you can continue working while earning your degree.

Can I work full-time while earning my MSN degree?

Yes—you do not need to stop working.

This online MSN program is specifically designed for working nurses. Most students continue working full-time while completing their degree, thanks to the flexible format, accelerated courses, and choice between a 2-year or 3-year completion path.

What is the difference between the 2-year and 3-year MSN program options?

Both options lead to the same 35-credit MSN degree—the difference is pacing.

  • The 2-year track is a more accelerated option, typically requiring 5–6 credits per semester
  • The 3-year track spreads coursework out more, averaging 3–4 credits per semester

Many working nurses in Ohio and the surrounding region choose the 3-year option for greater balance with work and family responsibilities.

Do I have to live in Ohio to enroll in this MSN program?

No. While Muskingum University is based in Ohio, this fully online MSN program is open to students nationwide.

Many of our students are located in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, but we welcome applicants from across the U.S. If you are applying from outside Ohio, our admissions team can help you understand any state-specific considerations for internships or licensure.

Does the MSN program include breaks, or is it year-round?

Yes, the program includes built-in summer breaks.

Unlike many online MSN programs that run continuously throughout the year, Muskingum’s schedule is designed with working nurses in mind. You’ll have intentional time off during the summer to recharge, focus on work and family, and avoid burnout.

Nursing is a demanding profession—physically and emotionally—and this structure allows you to maintain balance while continuing your education. You’ll still stay on track to complete your degree in your chosen 2-year or 3-year plan.

Accreditation & Academic Quality

Is Muskingum University’s MSN program accredited?

Muskingum University is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), ensuring your degree is recognized and respected.

The MSN in Nursing Leadership & Education is currently pursuing initial accreditation through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The program is designed to meet CCNE standards for graduate nursing education.

Curriculum & Learning Experience

What are the internship requirements for the MSN program?

Students complete two capstone internships:

  • One in nursing leadership
  • One in nursing education

Each internship requires 150 hours of supervised experience, for a total of 300 hours.

These experiences are completed in healthcare or academic settings in your local community, making it possible to gain hands-on experience without relocating. You’ll work under the guidance of experienced nurse leaders and educators while completing a real-world, evidence-based project.

Cost & Financial Aid

How much does the online MSN program cost?

Tuition is $595 per credit hour. With 35 total credits, the estimated total tuition is approximately $20,825.

This makes Muskingum one of the most affordable MSN programs in Ohio, especially for a degree that combines both leadership and education pathways.

Many students reduce their out-of-pocket cost through:

  • Employer tuition reimbursement (common across Ohio healthcare systems)
  • Federal financial aid
  • Nursing scholarships and grants

Admissions & Next Steps

Can I transfer graduate credits into the MSN program?

Yes. You may transfer up to 9 graduate-level credits from a regionally accredited institution, as long as:

  • You earned a grade of B or higher
  • The courses are comparable to Muskingum’s MSN curriculum
  • The credits were not used toward another degree

All transfer credits are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the University Registrar and MSN program leadership to ensure they align with program requirements.

Your advisor can help you determine which of your previous coursework may be eligible.

When does the MSN program start?

The MSN in Nursing Leadership & Education begins August 24, 2026, with applications currently open.

If you’re considering enrolling, we recommend connecting with an advisor early to review your qualifications, discuss transfer credits, and secure your place in the inaugural cohort.
