Accreditation
Muskingum University (MU) is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Many of MU’s academic programs have specialized accreditation specific to their fields. State Regulations
NC-SARA BADGE
Muskingum University has been approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) initiative. Participation in SARA grants the University reciprocity to offer online and distance learning programs to residents of other SARA states, except where noted. Professional Licensure
Federal regulations require that Muskingum University publicly disclose whether completing certain programs, which may lead to professional licensure or certification, meets the educational requirements for licensure or certification in each state. This disclosure applies to all programming modalities, including on-ground, online, or hybrid.
Students may enroll in a licensure program if they will be physically residing in a state or territory where the program meets the educational requirements for licensure while attending Muskingum University. Students who will be residing in a state or territory where the program does not meet the educational requirements for licensure may contact the specific program academic department to discuss any available options.

While the university is authorized to operate in other SARA member states, program-specific considerations may be noted. Some professional programs, such as nursing, teacher education, and others, also fall under the jurisdiction of state professional licensing boards. If you are considering a program that leads to licensure or certification, it is essential to understand the regulations and requirements for your home state before enrolling in any academic program. Muskingum University Education Programs
Graduate and Undergraduate
Muskingum University is a member in good standing of the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP), a national accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. All programs have been awarded initial accreditation by AAQEP through June 30, 2028. Since 1928, the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) has served as a professional membership organization supporting state departments of education and professional standards boards and commissions responsible for the preparation, licensure, and discipline of K-12 educational personnel. Muskingum University Master of Occupational Therapy
ACOTE® accredited occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant educational programs satisfy the states’ educational requirements in the United States and its territories. Students graduating from an ACOTE® accredited occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant educational program are eligible to take the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) certification exam and apply for licensure in all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Graduates of Muskingum University’ MOT program are eligible to sit for the national examination for the occupational therapist, administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT®). After successful completion of this exam, the graduate will be an occupational therapist, registered (OTR). In addition, all states require licensure to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT examination. Students who plan to seek licensure in other states will need to contact that state’s licensure board for specific requirements. Click here for a list of the state’s licensure requirements. A felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
