Jane Pennington, Class of 1967

Jane Louise Pennington, 81, passed peacefully on May 26, 2026, in Oklahoma City. Jane was born on March 20, 1945, in Washington, D.C., to Joseph and Frances Pennington. She was raised in Morris Plains, New Jersey, alongside her younger brothers, John and Lee. Jane graduated from Morristown High School in 1963 and earned her degree in Education from Muskingum College in Ohio in 1967. She later continued her studies in education at both the University at Buffalo and the University of Oklahoma. After graduating from college, Jane accepted an opportunity to teach on an Army base in Schw bisch Hall, Germany. During her time abroad, she embraced every opportunity to travel throughout Europe. It was there she met her husband, and together they returned to the United States to marry and begin their life together in Buffalo, New York. Jane taught for several years at her beloved School 16 in Buffalo before stepping away from the classroom to raise her family. In 1984, Jane and her family moved to Norman, Oklahoma, where she quickly built deep roots in the community she would call home for the rest of her life. In 1991, Jane began a new chapter by attending law school at the University of Oklahoma, earning her Juris Doctor in 1993. She dedicated much of her legal career to advocating for families in need through her work with Legal Aid of Western Oklahoma. Whether serving as a reading specialist in Oklahoma City and Moore or later as an attorney in the Oklahoma City and Norman Legal Aid offices, Jane's life was marked by service to others. She was deeply involved at First Presbyterian Church of Norman, where she served in leadership roles and supported numerous outreach efforts, including the CROP Walk, Mission Committee, and the church thrift store. Jane also served on the boards of the Center for Children and Families, Inc., and the Mary Abbott House in Norman. In retirement, Jane found joy in travel, water aerobics at the Norman YMCA, and film studies courses through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Oklahoma. In recent years, she especially treasured spending summers in Maine with her daughter. Jane spent her final years at Town Village in Oklahoma City, where she appreciated the kindness and care of both the independent living staff and her team with Chosen Senior Healthcare. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Frances Pennington, and her brothers, John and Joseph Lee Pennington. Jane is survived by her devoted daughters, Karen Hartman of Bangor, Maine, and Kristen Hartman of Oklahoma City.
