Presidential Search

Letter From President Susan Hasseler

June 18, 2025

Dear Muskingum Community,

After careful reflection, I have shared with the Board of Trustees my intention to retire from the presidency of Muskingum University at the end of the 2025-26 academic year.

This decision comes with a full and grateful heart. It has been an exceptional privilege to serve as your president for the past nine years and to walk alongside each of you - students, faculty, staff, leaders, alumni, trustees, and friends - as we have worked together for the past nine years to build a strong future for Muskingum.

Since my first days at Muskingum, I have been inspired by the shared commitment to students, our region, and the world. I have seen this commitment embodied in classrooms and labs, in performances and athletic competitions, in the workplace and in the community, and in the powerful ways in which we have come together to purposefully prepare students for a lifetime of learning and service.

Together, we have embraced innovation while honoring tradition - reimagining academic offerings for a broad continuum of learners, creating robust student support systems, investing in our physical and technological infrastructure, and strengthening our commitment to inclusion and access. We have navigated challenges with resilience and emerged with an even deeper sense of purpose. We continue to create a Muskingum like always and a Muskingum like never before.

While transitions always come with mixed emotions, when the time comes, I will step into this next chapter confident that Muskingum is well-positioned for the future. The deep commitment of this community to educational excellence, student success, and care for one another will continue to guide and sustain Muskingum for generations to come.

I will remain fully engaged throughout this academic year as the Senior Leadership Team and I continue our focus on key institutional priorities while supporting a thoughtful and smooth transition.

The board is committed to a strong and comprehensive national search process. Our Board Chair, Cheryl Carpenter, will be communicating with you shortly about next steps in that process.

Thank you for your dedication and support. Muskingum is a very special place because of each one of you. I look forward to serving with you in the coming year.

With warmest regards and confidence in a bright future,

Sue
