Debate team wins state championship at OFA novice tournament

The Muskingum University debate team won the state championship at the Ohio Forensics Association State Novice and Interstate Individual Events Tournament, held recently at Ohio University in Athens.

Muskingum’s debate team members are Beth Ford ’17 and Carter Brown ’16.  In addition, both earned honors as Individual Parliamentary Debate Speakers, with Brown earning first place and Ford earning third place. 

In the individual events categories of competition, the following students took honors:

Ohio Forensics Association Novice Awards

Carter Brown ’16:
First place in Trithon (highest scores in three genres of individual events competition)
Second place in Rhetorical Criticism
Fifth place in Prose
Third place in Impromptu

Beth Ford ’17: 
Third place  in Trithon (highest scores in three genres of individual events competition)
Sixth place in Persuasion
Second place in Poetry

Cody Pettit ’17:
Fifth place in Persuasion
Fifth place in Impromptu 

Interstate Individual Events Tournament Awards

Team honors

The Muskingum team won first place sweepstakes in the Focus Division and Erica Canter ’15 and Carter Brown ’16 earned fourth place in Improvisational Duet Acting.

Erica Canter ’15:
First place in Junior Varsity Prose
Fourth place in Varsity After Dinner Speaking
Fifth place in Varsity Persuasion 

Jamie Graves ’15:
Second place in Junior Varsity Poetry
Fifth place in Poetry Slam

Muskingum was competing against teams from Ohio University, the University of Akron, Marietta College, Cedarville University, Heidelberg University, Miami University, Eastern Michigan University, Butler University and Ivy Tech Community College.

The director of forensics at Muskingum is Instructor of Communication Rachel Pollock.
