Dr. Hansen to chair national conference

Muskingum University Distinguished Professor of Education Dr. Barbara A. Hansen is chair of a national conference, Rural Strong: Collaborating, Innovating and Revitalizing for Rural Prosperity, set for October 27 and 28 at the Hilton Polaris in Columbus.  The event is hosted by Battelle for Kids, the Ohio Department of Education and the Kentucky Department of Education. 

Among the keynote speakers at the event will be U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Former Governors Jim Geringer (Wyoming), Bev Perdue (North Carolina), Bob Taft (Ohio); and Bob Wise (West Virginia) and Homer Hickam, author of Rocket Boys: A Memoir (adapted into the movie, October Sky). 

"This two-day event is designed to inspire individual potential and possibilities by  sharing examples from powerful rural schools and education leaders who are linked to prosperous rural communities,” said  Dr. Hansen, the Dave Longaberger Professor of Teaching and Learning at Muskingum University since 2005.

The East Muskingum Local School District in New Concord will be represented by Jill Johnson, Steve Brooks, Adams Brenner, Gail Requardt and Anne Troendly who will speak on the Ohio Appalachian Collaboration, A Road to Success – Transforming Rural Education.

Executive Director of Battelle for Kids Dr. Jim Mahoney and Ohio State Superintendent  Richard Ross will greet attendees, as well as present.  Participants from 12 states are attending.
