Muskingum Greek Life Leads a Year of Service and Community Impact
Muskingum University offers students a wide range of opportunities to get involved and make a meaningful impact on campus. Among these, Greek organizations play a key role in serving both the university and the wider community. During the 2024–2025 academic year, each organization demonstrated its unique contributions through significant service and engagement efforts.
Groups like Phi Kappa Tau and Theta Phi Alpha took on trash clean up this year with Adopt-a-Highway and in celebration of Earth Day. This demonstrated their unwavering dedication to not only maintaining the roads but to keeping the entire township in pristine condition, reflecting their commitment to community well-being and environmental responsibility. Their efforts have set a powerful example, inspiring others within the community to engage in similar environmentally conscious activities.
Another way these organizations are making a statement is Ulster’s pop tab campaign, which raises money for the Ronald McDonald House, a non-profit whose mission is to keep families together and provide a supportive environment when a child is sick. These efforts highlight the powerful impact that even small initiatives can have in supporting meaningful causes.
Delta Gamma Theta annually hosts the Delta 5K Color Run, a full-day event for the public. The event supports Safe Haven Baby Boxes and raises awareness about teenage pregnancy. Chi Alpha Nu and the Sisterhood of FAD did similar events by participating in the Dyslexia Awareness 5K in the fall and the Mental Health Walk hosted in the Bullock Complex.
The M.A.C.E. Club continued its Spike the Stigma Volleyball tournament coordinated with the Nursing Student Organization (NSO) and Active Minds Club, wrapping up the second year for the event. The tournament raised money for Genesis Hospital Mental Health Services and brought awareness to the stigma wrapped around mental health. Kappa Sigma took on their 10th annual Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving, held from February 28 to March 2, 2025; chapters nationwide collectively raised over $1.1 million for undergraduate scholarships.
Muskingum Greeks finished out the year in style, coordinating a Greek Week full of several competitive gaming events and activities for all of Greek Life to enjoy. As the organizations came together for this comradery, they still looked to serve the community and hosted a canned food drive throughout the week. Greek Life as whole collected over 3,000 cans for the local food pantry. This generous contribution will help support countless families in need, showcasing the dedication and unity within the Greek community.
Reflecting on an incredibly successful year, Greek Life has seen remarkable achievements and growth. However, there's a shared vision for even greater impact in the future. “We must leave room for improvement. Next year, I know we are pushing for more things that are community service related. I’m hoping that fraternities raise their minimum requirement for community service hours so that we get more people out there,” Vice President of Fraternities Nicholas Farahay said.
Notably, two Greek organizations were recognized by the University for their average GPA. The sorority of Theta Phi Alpha held a 3.49 average GPA, while the fraternity of Phi Kappa Tau held a 3.09. These organizations show how they excel not only in their involvement, but also in the classroom.
The contributions from Muskingum University’s Greek organizations serve as a testament to the standards of unity, leadership, and values of service on campus. From environmental initiatives and health advocacy to fundraising for charities and educational awareness, each group plays a vital role in creating a more engaging community. With ambitious goals on the horizon, Greek Life sets the stage for continued growth and impact.
