Students present research at Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Week
Science Week

Muskingum University students presented their research findings at the science division’s Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Week, held April 16-19 on the campus.

The week features two events: The James Bradford Colloquium and the Homer S. Anderson Lecture. At the colloquium, students speak on their research projects to their peers and faculty members, each with a strict 15-minute time limit that emulates a professional science conference. Those presentations are then judged and ranked by the faculty, and awards are granted to the top three presenters.

The following students received top honors for their colloquium presentations:

First place was awarded to John Barba III and Elizabeth Knauss who presented It's Not Marijuana, It's Barbabant: Evaluating a Novel Endocannabinoid-1 Receptor Antagonist in Parkinson's Disease.

Second place went to Jeffrey Burkholder who presented The Removal of Oil from Water Using the Metal-Organic Framework Compound HKUST-1.

Third place was awarded to Harrison Raub who presented The Influence of Shading and Mixed Leaf Litter Nutrient Quality on the Decomposition Rates Produced by Stream Shredder Invertebrates.

The following students also made presentations at the colloquium:

Elizabeth Files presented Using Music Education to Achieve Nonmusical Goals for Special Education.

Logan Hall presented Civic Engagement and Free Speech Controversies.

Ryan Mack presented Examining the Effects of Varied Base Level and Varied Flow Rates on Stream Processes.

Matthew Nardi, Amanda Nemeth and David Stainbrook presented Thermal Gradients in the Complex Plane.

Courtney Ringhiser presented Presence of Staphylococcus Aureus and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus in a Collegiate Iii Athletic Training Room.

At the Homer S. Anderson Lecture, students make poster presentations of their research in a manner that is typical of a professional science conferences. Each student is expected to be available to answer questions about their poster from their peers and faculty members.

The Anderson Lecture included a presentation by Muskingum alumnus Doug McClain ’11, titled “From Medical School to Mallards.” He discussed his experiences in graduate school and his professional work with the Illinois National Survey at Forbes Biological Station in Havana, IL and at his role with the Ohio Division of Wildlife, where he works as a waterfowl biologist.
