For Matt Schreiber, ’03, an internship during college turned into a full-time career opportunity. Schreiber, who majored in mathematics, spent the summer after his junior year interning with Northwestern Mutual/The Forker Company, a life and health insurance agency in his hometown of Zanesville, Ohio.

After continuing the intern program at The Forker Company through his senior year at Muskingum, Schreiber was offered a full-time position as an account representative. He focused on individual life insurance, disability insurance and investments initially, then began learn the health and employee benefits side of the business as well. Schreiber was recently promoted to Vice President.

Schreiber is involved in several community organizations, including the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) and the Muskingum County Community Foundation Council. He also currently serves as Vice President of the Board for Eastside Community Ministry, which serves underprivileged children and adults in the area.

As someone working in a service industry, Schreiber says, he has to be able to communicate effectively with individuals from all backgrounds and personalities – a skill that he learned as he networked with professors and fellow classmates at Muskingum.

Schreiber advises college students who are thinking about the future to “Find an internship! It will give you real-life experience in what may potentially be your career. The experience I had in my internship was invaluable. Had I not taken the step to try the internship I would not be where I am today in my career.”
