Muskingum University Faculty Award Information

In accordance with section 220.6 of the Muskingum University Academic Policies and Procedures manual three faculty awards will be presented this academic year to recognize exceptional merit.  

  • The William Oxley Thompson Award for Excellence in Teaching 
  • The William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Scholarship
  • The Cora I. Orr Faculty Service Award

Nominations are invited from the faculty and are to be submitted via the online form no later than the Friday preceding spring break of the current academic year.  The previous year’s recipients and the Provost will serve as the selection committee.  Announcement of the award recipients will be made during the April Muskingum University Celebration of Excellence Program.

The William Oxley Thompson Award for Excellence in Teaching Criteria

The award will be given for consistently superior teaching accomplishments.  The teaching considered may be either undergraduate, graduate or both.  Documentation should focus on the effectiveness of instruction and providing multiple sources of evidence.
Areas of documentation may include such things as: 
•    quality of presentation in classroom or field
•    command of subject matter
•    development and use of innovative methods
•    student's achievement
•    ability to motivate students
•    peer evaluation
•    student evaluation 
•    current and professional development
•    advising, tutoring, direction of theses and dissertations, and other forms of assisting students  
•    textbooks or other published instructional materials indicative of teaching effectiveness 
•    design or revision of courses, curricula, and materials 
•    management of instructional programs or components

The William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Scholarship Criteria

The award will be given to recognize individual faculty members who distinguish themselves and the University through their scholarship.  
Areas of documentation may include such things as:
•    publications
•    research projects
•    grants
•    theatrical productions, musical compositions or performances
•    other creative works
•    other noteworthy contributions to knowledge or significant evidence of professional achievement in the academic disciplines

The Cora I. Orr Faculty Service Award Criteria

The service considered may have been provided to a department, the college, the institution, professional organizations, community organizations, the general public, or a combination of these.  Documentation should focus on the nature of the faculty member's contribution, its quality, its impact, its relation to the general welfare of the university, and its effect on the university community.
