Bio

Dr. Kerrigan is the author of Johnny Appleseed and the American Orchard (Johns Hopkins, 2012) and the editor of several local histories. He has also published pieces in The Antioch Review, Southwestern Historical Quarterly, and Teaching History. He regularly gives talks on the history of the apple in the United States and on the myth of Johnny Appleseed. He has two works currently in press: a book chapter on early Ohio cider culture in the forthcoming book Settling Ohio: First Peoples and Beyond (Ohio University Press, June, 2023) and a primary source reader, West Virginia’s War (Ohio University Press, TBD). His new research is on the story of bird-human conflicts in American history. When not teaching and writing, he is an avid bird watcher and advocate for birds, serving in the role of Conservation Committee Chair for the Ohio Ornithological Society.
