Susan Scheidel Woodcock, Class of 1968

Susan Woodcock passed away peacefully in her home at River Landing in Colfax, NC on Oct. 7, 2026, following more than a yearlong struggle with cancer. She was born on June 26, 1946, in French Cameroun to Presbyterian missionaries Julius and Mary Black Scheidel. After spending most of her childhood in Africa, her family returned to the States, where she graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland, Muskingum College in Ohio, and finally Simmons College in Boston, earning a master’s degree in library science. Her librarian career was brief as she turned to raising her children full-time in Raleigh then Waynesville, NC.

She was a lifelong learner who could talk to anyone about anything and did. She was a devoted friend to many. She encouraged her daughters to pursue their individual interests and careers. She took great delight in her granddaughters, matching their sense of wonder and discovery with her own. She enjoyed cruising around the world with her husband in retirement, finally taking some time to indulge herself a bit after giving so much of her time in service to others throughout her life.

She is survived by her husband Ray; daughters Edith Brady of High Point, Sharon Woodcock of Charlotte and Joy (Jason Ponder) of Jacksonville, Florida; and her granddaughters Virginia, Madeline, Carley, and Vanessa.
