Barbara Mitchell Johnston, Class of 1947
Barbara Lee Johnston, age 102, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Arborview Court in Wisconsin Rapids.
Barbara was born on September 27, 1923, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to Maurice and Gertrude (Magill) Mitchell. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. On July 13, 1952, she married Donald MacDuff Johnston in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Throughout her life, Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker who deeply loved her family. She was an entrepreneur who founded Cranberry Corners Antique Shop and later assisted with estate sales throughout the Wisconsin Rapids area.
Barbara was a lifelong member of First Congregational Church in Wisconsin Rapids. She was also active in the Wisconsin Rapids Community Theatre and the Senior Women’s Club in Wauwatosa. Her many interests included antiquing, gardening, crafting, painting, chair caning. In her earlier days she loved skiing, and tennis.
Barbara’s vibrant spirit, genuine kindness, and enthusiasm for life touched all who knew her. She never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for making others feel welcomed, valued, and encouraged. Her faith in Jesus Christ guided her life and inspired the love and generosity she so freely shared with others. Her legacy of faith and love will continue through the many lives she touched.
Barbara is survived by her devoted daughter, Lynn (Dan) Kirkbride; her beloved son, Brian Johnston; her grandchildren, Hannah Kirkbride Kraner (Tom) Kraner, Jeremy (Tara) Westerman, Abby Kirkbride (Ben) Rasmussen, Mitchell Westerman, and Charlie (Whitney) Westerman; and her great-grandchildren, Max and Nannette Kirkbride Kraner, Beck, Remy and Gabriel Westerman and Milo MacDuff Westerman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald MacDuff Johnston; her sisters, Janice Day and Phyllis Wildman; and her parents.
