READING ENDORSEMENT

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

  • Endorsement includes two parts
    • 12 credit hours of pre-requisite foundational course work (previous course work may meet these requirements)
    • 12 credit hours in advanced literacy studies 
  • All courses delivered online, asynchronous (with flexible scheduling) 
  • Based on Science of Reading theory & practice 
  • Requires a substantial field experience during content courses
  • Complete the endorsement in as little as one semester
  • Combine the Reading Endorsement with a Master of Arts in Education degree with an additional 19 credit hours

Reading Endorsement Courses (12 credits)

  • EDUC 660 * Foundations of Reading: Pre-K through Grade 12 (3) 
  • EDUC 661 * Teaching Reading Pre-K through Grade 12: Environment, Curriculum, Methods & Materials (3) 
  • EDUC 662 * Advanced Assessment for Literacy Instruction (3) 
  • EDUC 663 * Leadership for Literacy (3) 

Note: Additional field hours required as part of each course. 

If you wish to continue on to the MAE degree, you may complete additional online coursework (e.g. EDUC 605, EDUC 606, etc.) to convert the endorsement into a full MAE.

  • EDUC 700 Research Seminar and Project (3)
  • EDUC 710 Practitioner Seminar and Project (3)

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH THE READING ENDORSEMENT?

With a Reading Endorsement, you can:

  • Serve as a Reading Specialist / Literacy Coach in K–12 settings
  • Lead literacy initiatives in schools (e.g. curriculum & intervention design)
  • Support and train classroom teachers in reading best practices
  • Conduct reading assessments & interventions for struggling readers
  • Move into roles in instructional leadership focused on literacy

CAREER OUTCOMES

Graduates may move into positions such as:

  • Reading Specialist
  • Literacy Coach / Intervention Specialist
  • K–12 classroom teacher with strong literacy credentials
