Across The Pond: Students Explore History and Culture in Europe
Thirteen students from various majors had the exciting opportunity to travel and explore different areas of London and Paris in May. The week-long trip included several events and activities that allowed students to learn, discover, and appreciate the cultures of these European cities. Associate Professor of English Dr. Kekoa Kaluhiokalani was one of the advising faculty members on the trip leading the group through these passages.
“It is not an easy thing to do, running overseas travel programs—but I can attest from first-hand experience that it is clear to me how meaningful these programs are for Muskingum students,” Kekoa said.
Study Away programs have allowed Muskingum students to experience many historical cities across Europe. Places like The Duomo in Florence, a historical cathedral in Italy, and Buckingham Palace in London offer unique experiences. Additionally, witnessing life-changing moments is truly unforgettable—like the engagement of Sydney Belville and Caleb Simpson at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

“Caleb and I met on scholarship day at Muskingum! We both were placed into the same group because of our majors and met in February 2022. We connected via social media afterwards, and the rest is history! We did long distance over the summer until we moved into Muskingum, and we haven't left each other's sides since,” Sydney explained.
Kekoa's extensive travels abroad for these Study Away trips have provided him with invaluable experiences that resonate with stories like Sydney and Caleb's. Having explored diverse cultures, historical landmarks, and breathtaking cities, he has witnessed firsthand how these journeys can forge lasting connections and personal growth.
“This was my 25th study-away program at Muskingum University and the 16th year of overseeing these types of travel activities; I have a lot of experience to rely on as I put together these trips. I am still in contact with a few graduated Muskies who went on my trips in the past, and a few have become world travelers on their own. And that makes me very, very happy,” Kekoa said.
These programs require a significant amount of planning, from booking hotels to the daily activities they engage in during their stay. For such trips, the planning cycle begins a year in advance because of the intricate nature of transportation arrangements, hotel bookings, and the opportunity to promote the program, ensuring all students have an equal opportunity to apply.
“I have the pleasure of bringing students in direct contact with so many amazing experiences: seeing the Mona Lisa upfront and personal, walking around the concourses of the Colosseum, standing under the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, gazing up at Michelangelo's David,” Kekoa said.
This long-standing program has provided years of adventures for Muskingum students, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of European cultures. The dedication of faculty like Dr. Kekoa Kaluhiokalani ensures that these transformative experiences continue to enrich the lives of students, providing them with memories and insights that last a lifetime.
