Junior Kayla Wilkerson has been selected by Campus Compact to participate in the 2018 Newman Civic Fellowship program. The year-long Newman Civic Fellowship supports the next generation of public problem solvers in their personal, professional, and civic growth with extensive training opportunities and learning resources.

“Kayla is an exceptional student leader who puts compassion, intentionality, and motivation into improving the community, on campus, locally, and nationally,” said Muskingum University President Susan S. Hasseler. “She is a passionate advocate for creating opportunities for diverse students to excel and succeed in a university setting.”

“By serving in multiple leadership roles at Muskingum University and collaborating with many individuals and organizations on campus, I am able to highlight the many possibilities that exist in terms of academic success, involvement, and leadership to both current and prospective students,” Wilkerson said.

On campus, Wilkerson serves as the Diversity Relations Chair for Student Senate, the Academic Excellence Chair for Theta Phi Alpha, a Muskie Ambassador mentoring first-year multicultural students, a Resident Assistant, a Student Financial Aid Assistant, an Admission Tour Guide, an Assistant Preschool Teacher, and a Student Assistant for the Education Department. She is also active in the Muskie Impact community service program and is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children.

The Newman Civic Fellowship was created in honor of Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders and a tireless advocate for the role of higher education in preparing students for active and engaged citizenship. The 2018 Newman Civic Fellows represent colleges and universities from 40 states, Washington, D.C., Mexico, and Greece.

Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1000 colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education and to building democracy through civic education and community development.
