When Spenser Miller, ’08, saw the TV and radio stations on Muskingum’s campus and met a few faculty members he was, in his words – “sold.” Miller, who came to Muskingum from Grove City, a suburb south of Columbus, Ohio, majored in communication.
Miller says one of the most important lessons he learned at Muskingum was that “in most situations, you get out what you put in. This applies to class, clubs, sports, life, love, career…everything. Nothing is going to be handed to you; you have to put in the work.”
Following his graduation from Muskingum, Miller worked in television and radio broadcasting for the NBC affiliate in nearby Zanesville, Ohio. Miller also spent time teaching in South Korea.
Although he wanted to go to graduate school, he wasn’t sure of the field. It was his wife who introduced him to speech and hearing science. He earned his Au.D. (Doctor of Audiology) from The Ohio State University. He now works for Starkey Hearing Technologies, a hearing aid manufacturing company, in a sales and clinical support role.
As with many Muskies, the relationships that Miller built on campus have had a huge impact on his life. He says, “The first person I ever met on campus became my mentor, fraternity brother, and I am now the godfather of his son.” Miller adds, “Like many others, I was randomly assigned a roommate my freshman year. What is less typical is that we ended up being roommates during our entire college career and to this day (over 12 years later) we’re still best friends. I could not be more thankful for the friendships I developed while at Muskingum and the impact those individuals have had, and continue to have, in my life.”
