Charlotte Colley, ’04, began her college career intending to major in biology, but switched to political science despite completing most of a biology degree.
Colley was initially attracted to Muskingum because of the track and cross country program, but also loved the campus and Village, and received financial aid.
During her time as a student, Colley worked with Dr. Walter Huber on “different research projects…including a comparison of civic engagement between students at Muskingum…and Miami University of Ohio.” Colley also completed internship work for the cities of Cambridge and Zanesville.
Since graduating eight years ago, Colley has worked as a local government consultant, Management Assistant for the City of Dublin, Ohio, and as a Senior Project Manager for the City of New Albany, Ohio. However, her most recent endeavor brings her “home,” so to speak.
Colley now serves as the Village Administrator for New Concord. She describes her responsibilities: “I oversee Village operations (Water, Wastewater, Streets, Parks, Planning and Administration). I develop the budget in conjunction with the Police Chief, Fire Chief, Fiscal Officer and Mayor. I draft legislation for Council meetings and work closely with Council members and the Mayor.”
Colley credits Muskingum with providing her with a well-rounded education and giving her the opportunity to “try out” her major with research opportunities and internships. She also says, “Muskingum gave me a great appreciation for small towns and the partnership between a small town and a college that must exist in order for both entities to be successful. I loved my time as a Muskie!”
Colley advises students to “Test out your chosen field! Do whatever you can to get an internship with a company so that you can see what it’s like ‘in the real world.’ Ask questions of practitioners to get a better understanding of education expectations for getting your first job. Also get out and network as much as possible! Lastly, enjoy your last year on the hill! You can never get it back once it’s over. The memories will always be there so make sure they are good ones!”
