Empowerment: Develop a sense of personal and collective efficacy, understanding that purposeful action can lead to meaningful and positive change.

Engagement: Apply knowledge and empowerment to lead civic initiatives, inspire others, and actively contribute to the improvement of communities.

GOALS OF THE PROGRAM

Students who participate in the program will:

  • Gain knowledge of the groups, systems, and dynamics that influence communities and facilitate change
  • Promote civic awareness, learning, and engagement among peers and within their broader communities
  • Build strong networks with peers, mentors, and alumni to support the development of impactful cohort projects on campus and beyond
  • Receive up to $4,000 to pursue a high-impact learning opportunity aligned with their unique passions
  • Participate in fully funded experiences with non-profits, community partners, and government organizations
  • Engage in mentorship and leadership by collaborating with fellows in the program

Muskingum University gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation, a primary benefactor of the John and Annie Glenn Public Service Fellows Program. This transformative gift empowers our students to engage deeply in civic leadership, community service, and democratic engagement—advancing a shared vision of a more informed and participatory society. The Knowlton Foundation’s commitment to fostering public dialogue and civil discourse aligns strongly with the Fellows Program’s purpose of developing thoughtful, ethical leaders who are prepared to serve the common good.

The Foundation’s investment is part of a broader legacy of philanthropy inspired by the life and values of Austin E. “Dutch” Knowlton—a visionary entrepreneur, architect, and civic leader who championed education, innovation, and public service. Mr. Knowlton was the owner and chairman of the Knowlton Construction Company, which built more than 600 major buildings across Ohio and the Midwest. A graduate of The Ohio State University’s School of Architecture, he was a lifelong advocate for practical learning, interdisciplinary scholarship, and broad civic participation. In addition to the Fellows Program, the Knowlton Foundation has established the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation Endowed Memorial Scholarship, which supports students pursuing majors in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at Muskingum. A full biography of Mr. Knowlton and additional details about the scholarship may be found here.
