Muskingum University students selected as one of six finalists for The Fiscal Challenge, where they will present and defend their proposal to expert policy analysts in Washington D.C. April 7-9.

Assistant Professor of Economics Arjun Sondhi had his Economics Seminar students participate in the challenge for their senior seminar project. The Muskingum University team includes:

  • Senior Caleb Barnette, Accounting, Economics, and Business Management major from New Lexington, OH;
  • Senior Jacob Loudon, Economics, Business Management and Marketing major from Streetsboro, OH;
  • Junior Antonia Snider, Business Management, Economics, and Marketing major from Cambridge, OH;
  • Senior Jacob Untied, Economics, Accounting, Business Management, and Marketing major from Zanesville, OH.

The ECON 495 Seminar class enables students to pursue an approved research project in economic theory. For The Fiscal Challenge, students were tasked to submit a presentation of a budget plan where the debt-to-GDP ratio is approximately 98 percent by 2051. The Muskingum students focused on 5 categories for their presentation: Healthcare, Social Security, Infrastructure, Tax Code, and Defense.

“Being selected as finalists for The Fiscal Challenge demonstrates the knowledge and skill of our students,” said Professor Sondhi, who will be accompanying the team to the finals. “I am proud of their accomplishments and look forward to seeing them shine in Washington.”

The Fiscal Challenge is an educational non-profit 501(c)-3 with a mission to enhance students’ understanding of fiscal policy using experiential education by hosting an annual collegiate competition where students across the country devise and defend their own plan to stabilize the national debt. Roughly 200 presentations were submitted, and six teams were selected as finalists to present in Washington D.C.
