Muskie Fellowship Project leads to published article
hupp dunak

Victoria Hupp ’19 and Associate Professor of History Karen Dunak have co-authored "Of News Literacy and History Education," which will appear in the February 2019 issue of The American Historian.

A history major, Ms. Hupp completed a Muskie Fellowship with Dr. Dunak during the Summer of 2018 on the Role of the Media in the 1960 election of President John F. Kennedy. The American Historian article, which emphasizes the significance of news literacy and civic engagement in history education in high school and beyond, developed from this work. The American Historian is the professional magazine for members of the Organization of American Historians.

Ms. Hupp’s Muskie Fellowship included two additional projects. She wrote an extended essay on the lasting legacy of John F. Kennedy, as a product of his team's active image work and media's framing of him both during his presidency and after his assassination. She also created several series of lesson plans based on her research, one focusing on image-making and politics and one focusing on the nature of government in 1960s America.
