Key of Knowledge tradition revived
key of knowledge

During the Opening Convocation on August 28, 2018, Muskingum renewed the historic tradition of passing on the “Key of Knowledge.”

More than 100 years old, the large wooden key was traditionally passed from a member of the senior class to a member of the incoming class during Muskingum’s Opening Convocation ceremonies of the early 1900s. As times and customs changed over the years, however, the tradition stopped, and the Key was relegated to storage in the University library.

To begin the tradition anew, Muskingum Provost Nancy Evangelista presented the Key to Student Senate President Kayla Wilkerson ’19, as the University marked the opening of the 2018-19 academic year.

“This key represents Muskingum University’s commitment to provide you, our students, with the knowledge that will be the key to your future," Dr. Evangelista said as she presented the key.  “It will open doors to you in three ways.  You will acquire the knowledge and build the skills you will need to become innovative problem-solvers and catalysts for change.  You will explore diverse interests and perspectives in order to understand your own purpose.  And, you will learn how to communicate and collaborate with others, in order to make your own unique impact on our world.”
