Ed Sherman ’36: Impact Endures as NCAA Division III Turns 50
Ed Sherman

Muskingum University Coach, Athletic Director, and Faculty Member Ed Sherman '36 (1912-2009) was a founding father of the nationwide division structure for collegiate athletics.

NCAA Division III celebrated its 50th Anniversary on August 6, 2023, the result of Coach Sherman’s enduring impact.

He chaired the 1973 committee that created Divisions I, II, and III, and was a key figure in NCAA governance from 1967-1979, following his tenure as Muskingum’s head football coach from 1945-1966. He received a White House Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Athletics and was the first Division III coach inducted into the National Football Foundation’s College Football Hall of Fame.

The 50th anniversary of NCAA Division III marks a significant milestone in collegiate sports. Division III provides an equitable and inclusive environment for student-athletes to take responsibility for their own paths, follow their passions, and discover their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

This historic anniversary celebrates the enduring legacy of Division III and its commitment to a transformative collegiate experience for all student-athletes.

Muskingum looks forward to celebrating that legacy throughout the 2023-24 academic year.
