Dr. Arnold Speaks at Woodrow Wilson Center
Richard Arnold

Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Richard Arnold delivered a talk at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. on April 10, 2018.

Entitled “Football in a Time of Sanctions: The 2018 World Cup in Russia,” Dr. Arnold’s talk focused on the international controversy surrounding this year’s event.

According to Dr. Arnold, “Some Western leaders have called for a boycott of the event and or even an attempt to block it. But for Russia, the World Cup represents an opportunity to throw off its political isolation, and to recover from the scandals surrounding state-sponsored doping. The event, however, is not without its risks, especially in light of the large number of foreigners who will be attending the games."

Dr. Arnold also served as the Guest Editor for the special edition of Problems of Post-Communism, which focused on the 2018 World Cup.

He recently provided evidence to the U.K. Foreign Affairs Select Committee regarding the upcoming World Cup, working jointly with Dr. Andrew Foxall of the Henry Jackson Society in London.
