Jess Scott

Jess Scott, a 2006 elementary education major, chose Muskingum because of the nationally ranked Education Department. Scott now resides in Hampton, Virginia, where she teaches at-risk pre-Kindergarten students to help them transition to kindergarten.

Scott’s involvement has extended well beyond the classroom and into the community. She has coached Odyssey of the Mind and middle school basketball, has sponsored the Newspaper Club, and served as Student Activities Director. She has also received several awards related to her efforts at “green” education, recycling and community cleanup. In 2013 she was honored as both the Hunter B. Andrews Teacher of the Year and the Hampton City School Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Scott feels the Education Department at Muskingum prepared her well. She explains, “Muskingum was able to prepare me for teaching and controlling my own classroom. We spent hours working in classrooms, completing practicum hours, preparing us for teaching. I remember taking Ky Davis's math class and expressing how worried we were about classroom behavior and discipline. Our focus quickly changed from math to learning the practical skills necessary for our careers. I think the education professors at Muskingum prepared us and did a tremendous job!”

Scott and her husband, also a Muskingum alum, have two daughters.
