Chase Myers, a Zanesville native, recently donated his stem cells to a complete stranger diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
One of Chase's friends and fraternity brothers, Connor, brought the Be the Match National Bone Marrow Registry to campus in the spring of 2015. Chase explains what happened next: "He said that there was a less than one percent chance that you would match with someone.... I decided I would help him out and register. In July, while working at band camp, I got a phone call telling me I was a preliminary match for someone. I went through many blood tests to see if we were a match and it turned out we were. After a lot of thought I decided to go through with it. I imagined being in this gentleman's shoes and realized that to me he was just another guy in the masses, but to him, I was his one chance at life; I was his hope. I felt like it wasn't my place to deny him a chance at life. So after five days of injections and being hooked up to an aphaeresis machine for three and a half hours, I have donated cells to him in hopes of putting him into a permanent remediation from leukemia."
Chase, who is very involved in the Music Department and works as a tour guide, chose Muskingum because he fell in love with the campus during his first visit.
