Betty Ogilvie Cooper, 82, of Lancaster, PA, died Thursday, May 24, 2018 after a lengthy illness at the Willow Valley Retirement Community. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late William and Louise Ferguson Ogilvie. She was the wife of VADM Daniel L. Cooper for 60 years.

Betty grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio and graduated from Muskingum College. Throughout her long and very productive life, she could be best described as a servant leader. A devout Christian woman, she served the Lord in every aspect of her life. As the wife of a career Naval Officer, she was committed to supporting the wives of the men who served with Dan in the submarine force and fund raising for those in the submarine community most in need. She was a leader in many of the churches and community organizations to which she belonged, to include serving as co-leader of the Stephen’s Ministry at the First Presbyterian Church in Reading PA. She selflessly spent time with her grandchildren, hosting them at “Camp Ooma” and at her favorite vacation spot in Capon Springs WV. She was a model wife, mother, grandmother and Christian woman, and she touched the lives of so many people, spreading the love of Christ by her personal example. She was member of Harvest Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters: Amy, wife of CAPT (ret.) Jeff Hughes, Saratoga Springs, NY and Cynthia, wife of CAPT (ret.) Don Rose, Spanish Fort, AL, six grandchildren: Sarah Shuey (Douglas), LT Stephen Hughes (Charlotte), ENS Kathryn Hughes, Andrew Rose, ENS Daniel Rose, and Midshipman Christopher Rose, and one brother, Dr. Daniel M. Ogilvie (Renee), Piscataway, NJ.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to Betty’s Memorial Service at Harvest Presbyterian Church, 517 Beaver Valley Pike, Lancaster, PA on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend William Massey officiating. Reception to follow the service. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be held at US Naval Academy Cemetery, Annapolis, MD at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Betty’s memory may be made to Dolphin Scholarship Foundation, 4966 Euclid Road, Suite 109, Virginia Beach, VA 23462; Harvest Presbyterian Church, 517 Beaver Valley Pike, Lancaster, PA 17602; and Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.

Marleen Apple Bain
Class Year:
1966

Marleen Apple Bain, of Missoula, Montana, passed away Monday, February 5, 2018 after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. Marleen attended Muskingum College where she met her husband, Phil Bain. While in chapel, Marleen leaned forward to pick up a pledge card as Phil was leaning back in the pew when they bumped heads. The two were soon married and enjoyed life in the “army barracks” of married student housing forming many dear, lifelong friendships. Marleen graduated from Muskingum with an English degree and two daughters. The family moved to Moscow, Idaho and finally to Missoula, Montana.

Marleen was a beloved wife, mother and friend. A tiny sized bundle of energy, Marleen lived life boldly and bravely. She was well-known for her compassion, humor, feistiness and the twinkle in her eye. She quickly developed a love for “Big Sky Country” and spent years hiking and horseback riding in her beloved Rattlesnake Wilderness. Marleen spent more than two decades working at the University of Montana as an Academic Advisor. Her love and commitment to her students was legendary.

Marleen is survived by her husband of fifty-four years, Phil Bain '65. Children; Christy Bain and son-in-law Michael Smith, of Seattle, and children Mimi and Violet Bain and Nathan and Andrew Kasselis-Smith; Amy Bain of Phoenix and children Ellie and Saadiya Bain; Martin Bain and daughter-in-law Mitzi Miller, of Reno, and children Kate and Andrew Bain. Her father, Harvey Apple 1922 and her in-laws, Muriel 1928 and Herbert Bain 1928, were all Muskingum grads.

Keith Roberts
Class Year:
1969

Keith Roberts recently published the book “Meaning Making with Malignancy: A Theologically Trained Sociologist Reflects on Living Meaningfully with Cancer.”

In some of these essays, Roberts focused on advice to people who have a chronically ill friend, such as the chapter, “Awkward! What to Say (or NOT Say) to Friends with a Life-threatening Disease.” Other chapters are directed to the ill person, such as the essay “Planning for the Future When ‘Planning the Future’ Feels like an Oxymoron.” The reflections are sometimes informed by philosophical or theological analyses and sometimes by a sociological lens.
