Sisterhood ReCoded Camp

Location:
Muskingum University

Muskingum University will host Sisterhood ReCoded, a free coding camp for girls 10 to 15 years old, from August 5-9. The camp is designed to engage young girls with interactive and fun technology, and allows participants to meet like-minded friends and college mentors who have a passion for technology.

“This is a no-stress way for middle and high school students to see if they have an interest in coding,” said Jay Shaffstall, assistant professor of computer science at Muskingum University and organizer of Sisterhood ReCoded since 2017. “With a national shortage of qualified computer science graduates, especially women graduates, this is a great way to encourage participation in an exciting STEM field.”

He explains that one of the main skills of computer coding is the ability to take a complex problem and break it down into manageable pieces. This skill, and others participants will learn during the camp, are useful in any field.

Professor Shaffstall will assist Emily Sink, a computer science major at Muskingum who will lead classes each day of the camp.
