Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds: "An American Salute"

Tickets are available at the door and are $7 for adults, $5 for youth and free for children 5 and under.

“An American Salute” celebrates America with a variety of patriotic music and music written by American composers. Featured on the program is Greg Danner’s “The Greatest Generation,” a work narrated by Muskingum University Associate Professor of Communication Eugene Alesandrini.

“The Greatest Generation,” which draws its title from Tom Brokaw’s book of the same title, refers to the generation of Americans that lived during World War II. The narration consists of four World War II soldiers’ letters home to their families and is set in a musically powerful manner.

Also featured on the program is Ryan Nowlin’s “Godspeed, John Glenn,” a work commissioned by Muskingum University to honor the life and legacy of one of its most cherished alumni. A musical portrayal of the life of John H. Glenn, Jr., this will be the third performance of the work.

The concert also includes a John Philip Sousa march, “The Thunderer;” “An American Fanfare” by Rick Kirby; “American Salute,” a fantasy of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home;” and “Gershwin!,” a medley of songs composed by George and Ira Gershwin.

The Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds are directed by Dr. David A. Turrill, associate professor of music and director of bands at Muskingum University. Performances of the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds are sponsored in part by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency that supports public programs in the arts.

During the concert, The Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds will be holding their annual fund raising raffle. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased at the door - $1.00 each or 6 tickets for $5.00. Raffle items include donations from area merchants.
