Action! An Exhibition of LeRoy Neiman’s Champions

Location:
Louis O. Palmer Gallery and Philip & Betsey Caldwell Hall

Best known for his brilliantly colored, stunningly energetic images of sporting events and leisure activities, LeRoy Neiman was one of the most popular living artists in the United States before his passing in 2012. Even those unfamiliar with his name will recognize his work, which often featured brilliant and bright strokes of magentas, yellows and greens applied in a fluid, abstract manner to describe the action taking place before him at Super Bowl games, Olympic contests and heavyweight boxing matches. Neiman counted many major sports figures and celebrities, including Frank Sinatra and Muhammad Ali, as personal friends, and was often seen sketching at major events on live television.

From Jan. 22 through April 14, a large selection of Neiman’s works will be on display at Muskingum University on loan from The LeRoy Neiman Foundation. The exhibition, entitled “Action! An Exhibition of LeRoy Neiman’s Champions,” features 74 works on display in Ohio for the first time. “Action!,” offered free to the public, is presented by Muskingum University and Kessler Sign Company, with additional support provided by Century National Bank and Barnes & Noble.

Exhibition hours for “Action!,” the Neiman exhibition at Muskingum University are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays; and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays through April 14. The exhibition is closed on Sundays. “Action!” is split between two different gallery locations on campus, the Louis O. Palmer Gallery and Philip & Betsey Caldwell Hall.
