Faculty FAQ

  1. What should the required syllabus statement say for disability accommodations?
    • Any student who wishes to request an accommodation is responsible to contact the Disability Education Office (DEO) to discuss his/her specific needs and the process to receive reasonable accommodations. Please contact the DEO, located in Walter Hall #26 or email deo@muskingum.edu to arrange an appointment as soon as possible. At the appointment, the procedure to coordinate accommodations will be discussed. You can also find information about the process for accommodation on the web at http://www.muskingum.edu/deo
  2. How will I know what students receive accommodations?
    • Accommodation Notification letters are sent via email by DEO after add/drop each semester. Some students wish to notify their professors themselves. In this case, the student will forward their Accommodation Notification from DEO to each of their professors.
  3. How are testing accommodations facilitated?
    • Students must request the use of their accommodation before every test or quiz. A minimum of three business days before their test/quiz, students submit an online test request to inform DEO that they would like to use their accommodations with the DEO Testing Center (https://www.muskingum.edu/disability/testing-accommodation-request). Two business days before the test/quiz, DEO will email the instructor with a list of students names that have requested to use their accommodations. The email contains several questions that need to be answered about the test/quiz. This helps us facilitate your exam for the students. The DEO Testing Center facilitates all testing accommodations. If you test/quiz is on Blackboard, you will need to adjust the Test Options to extend the time for each student listed on the email (see below).
  4. How do I adjust tests and quizzes for extended time testing on Blackboard?
    • Build your test or quiz as usual, but before the test is deployed, adjust your Test Options for a single student or group of students. This will eliminate needing to create a copy of the exam with a password.
      • Under Test Options > Test Availability Exceptions, each user can be adjusted for their accommodations of time duration, number of attempts, availability, and force completion.
    • Click here for an instructional video on how to adjust the test options for accommodations.
  5. How do I know if my online materials need to be in an accessible format?
    • If a student's accommodation letter from the DEO is listed as Course Materials in Alternate Format it means they need course materials in an accessible format.
  6. How do I ensure my online materials are in an accessible format?
  7. Who do I contact if I still have questions?
    • DEO can be contacted via:
      • e-mail at deo@muskingum.edu
      • phone at 740-826-6132
      • Teams chat with Carissa Taylor or Katlyn Goodin
