Lauren Ray Johnson Wear age 27 of Cambridge, passed away at her home on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 surrounded by her family. She was born on April 27, 1995 in Zanesville, a daughter of Laura L. (Henry) and Brian K. Wear. Lauren was a 2013 graduate of Meadowbrook High School and Mid East Career and Technology Centers, Buffalo Campus. She played the clarinet in the marching band for many years. She was a dancer and enjoyed ballet and performed in the Nutcracker. 

She graduated from Zane State College before receiving her bachelors degree in education from Muskingum University. Lauren enjoyed watching movies and a few favorites she watched over and over were: the Nightmare Before Christmas, Ugly Dolls, Trolls and the Riverdance. She loved unicorns, nature and flowers, and took many pictures of flowers and sunflowers. She was also an exceptional artist at pencil drawing. A member of Phi Theta Kappa, she was huge fan of the Disney character Stitch and she loved her cats Jasper and Alice. 

She leaves: her mother and father Laura and Brian Wear; two sisters, Ariel B. Wear and Autumn F. Wear; a step brother Michael B. Wear; her grandparents, John and Melba Henry of Byesville; and fiance` Tyler Scurlock. Lauren is preceded in death by her grandparents Robert S. Wear and Ada R. (Ehrman) Wear Drabik.

Bill Pertl Lovejoy of Brevard, NC died Sunday November 27, 2022 at age 95. He was born at home in the small coal mining community of Neffs, Ohio, on February 12, 1927, the same date as two men he greatly admired, Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin. He was well known among his family and friends for the annual birthday dinner he hosted in their honor. He graduated from Bellaire High School (Ohio) in 1945, leaving school halfway through his senior year to join the Navy, where he was a signalman aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Midway. After the end of World War II, he attended Muskingum College where he met his future wife, Martha Johnson, of Flushing Ohio. He graduated from Muskingum in 1951 with a BS in Geology. Bill was also on the varsity football and baseball teams and the sports editor for the college student newspaper. He credited Muskingum for teaching him that science, the arts, and sports can coexist.

Bill continued his education at the University of New Mexico where he received an MS in Geology in 1958. After working 6 years as a geologist for Shell Oil in Midland Texas, he returned to school at Oregon State University and completed a Ph.D. in Zoology. In 1968, he accepted a position as professor of biology at Georgia Southern College where he influenced the lives and careers of many students before retiring in 1987 as Professor Emeritus of Biology.

He and Martha married in 1952 and spent their lives enjoying birdwatching, hiking, traveling and quietly sharing their blessings with others. In 1996, they moved to Brevard in the mountains of western North Carolina. They became active members of the Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church. Although retired, Bill continued to "teach" as a volunteer for many years with the Pisgah National Forest Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Education Center. Bill and Martha shared a love for domestic and international travel. They traveled throughout the United States, favoring the Northwest and New England regions. They traveled to Africa twice, the Galapagos Islands, and throughout Europe.

Bill was dedicated to education and never stopped learning throughout his life. He challenged everyone around him to expand their knowledge and he maintained an active involvement in education through support of faculty and students at Muskingum University, University of New Mexico, Oregon State University and Georgia Southern University. He established scholarships as well as a Distinguished Lecture Series at each of these universities promoting excellence, intellectual advancement and inspiration in the sciences for future generations. Bill had an unbounding love for music and poetry. He loved reading poetry and could recite many poems from a wide array of poets. His musical interests ranged from Beethoven to Hoagie Carmichael to Frank Sinatra. He recalled that on rainy days during his childhood, he and his friends met in the basement of their small church and would compete to see who could list the most bandleaders. That musical passion persisted throughout his life. Until the moment of his death, if he did not know the words to a song, the composer, or the lyricist, he would look it up.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha; by his parents, Millard M. and Anna Pertl Lovejoy; two brothers, Millard M. Jr and John R. Lovejoy; a nephew, Jeffery Johnson and a niece, Lana Lovejoy Taylor. He is survived by nephew, Robert B. Lovejoy of Divide, CO; nieces, Katherine (Don) Barnes of Neffs, OH; Karen (Rodney) Kovacs of Flushing OH; nephew John K. Lovejoy (Carol) of Jewett, OH; nieces Christine (Tom) McGuire of Big Canoe, GA; Francine Johnson of Atlanta, GA; Cindy Johnson of Hartsville, TN; Kathy (Greg) Fisher of Coshocton, OH; Terre (Mike) Paller of Atlanta, GA; nephews Ron Johnson of Fredericktown, OH; and Robert Johnson (Lucy) of Shawnee, KS and numerous great nieces and nephews. 

J. Estelle Myers, age 82, of Dover, died Thursday, December 1, 2022, while in the Inn at Northwood Village at Dover following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Born on October 15, 1940, at Pittsburg, PA, Estelle was a daughter of the late Lee James and Juanita (Gray) Murray. She graduated from Penn Hills High School and continued her formal education at Muskingum College and Ashland College, where she obtained a Master's degree in Education. On June 25, 1960, Estelle married the late David William Myers and together the couple raised four children. Estelle was a longtime educator for the New Philadelphia City Schools. She was an active member of the former Broadway United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia. Estelle is survived by four children, Diane (Dave "Buzz") Bell, Eric (Laura) Myers all of Port Washington, Kurt (Darcey) Myers of Georgia, and Mark (Mandy) Myers of Uhrichsville; eight grandchildren, Dominic (Cori) Bell, Devin (Lucas) Ripley, Sarah Myers, Matthew Milligan, Adam Myers, Brendan Gambs, Braxtyn Myers, and Braylin Myers; and great-grandsons, Jaxon Ripley and Barrett Bell. Completing the family is a sister, Diane MacLachlan of Kansas, a brother, Lee (Barbara) Murray of Arizona, a half-sister, Mary Lee Perry, and a brother-in-law, Larry (Pat) Myers of Marysville, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lois J. Hemming was born on February 13, 1919 in Union Township, Muskingum County. A daughter of George W. and Margaret Stewart Hardesty. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, David C. Hemming, in 1970, her son, James S. Hemming, two brothers, Fred and Stewart Hardesty, and nephews, John and George Hardesty. She is survived by her son, Bill Hemming of Carrollton, Texas; her daughter-in-law, Teresa Hemming; and a grandson, Mathew (Traci) Hemming; and three great grandchildren, Ben, Will, and Lilly. Lois was a graduate of Muskingum College. She then taught elementary school in Carrollton for 32 years. Lois was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a teacher and superintendent of Sunday School and an elder of the church. Lois belonged to the Carroll County Genealogical and Historical Society, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, and Carroll County Retired Teachers Association. Through her work in the genealogical society she also researched her background and was a member of the First Families of Ohio that settled prior to the 1820s. Lois was raised on a farm in rural Muskingum County. She was an avid Christian, as was her aunt Etta who was a missionary to China and lived on the farm when in the USA. She lived her life according to the ten commandments and was adamant that "truth" was the key to a successful life, all people were created equal, and allow Christ into your heart. Her wisdom should never be neglected. 

Martha Ann McMillan Thompson, of Venice, FL, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2022. Marty was born in Ohio to Arthur and Verna (Staats) McMillan. She graduated from Danville High School and received a bachelor's degree from Muskingum College. She taught for more than 40 years, many at Nokomis Elementary. She enjoyed fishing, boating, and camping with family and friends. She was an avid reader and bridge player. In retirement she volunteered at Historic Spanish Point, dressed as an early pioneer, teaching school children simple weaving crafts. Her backyard pond and mangroves on Alligator Creek were a popular nesting and feeding spot for herons, woodstorks, many other birds, and the occasional otter. Marty is predeceased by husband Denney Church Thompson. She is survived by daughter Laura (Erik) Eisenman of Wilmington, DE, son Robert Andrew (Kirsten) Thompson of Venice, FL, and son Tracy Shawn (Kim) Thompson of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Karl Eisenman, Lena (Tony) Hernandez; Marlee Thompson, Shelby Thompson, Ethan Thompson, and great-grandson Gabriel Hernandez. 

Lewis D Sivard, 94, of Fair Oaks, California, went home to be with the Lord on November 15 th , 2022. Lewis, the son of the late Paul and Edna Sivard, was born December 8 th , 1927 in Cambridge, Ohio. Lewis graduated from Old Washington High School in 1945, and married Dorothy Knouff in 1950. He graduated from Muskingum University in 1952 with a B.S. degree in mathematics. In 1952, was employed by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation for 10 years. In 1962, Lewis was hired by Aerojet Corporation so he and his family moved to California. He worked at Aerojet for 30 years working in the Mass Properties Engineering program. Lewis was a veteran of WWII from 1946 1949 where he served in the US Army Air Force . During his service, Lewis was stationed at the Rhine-Main Air Base, near Frankfurt Germany where he maintained the Instrument Landing System during the Berlin airlift. Lewis was very active at his church and was an usher for many years. He loved to travel, especially in their RV. He deeply loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lewis was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy and his daughter Vereda Williams. He is survived by his daughter Lewette, her husband Mike Wacker and their children, Carissa, Danelle and Derek, as well as his son-in-law Lee Williams and his children Ryan and Kaylee. He is also survived by his three great grandchildren, Theodore, Aftyn, and Noel.

ROCKY RIVER, OHIO - Jane B. Anderson, 92, of Rocky River, died Sunday November 27th peacefully in her sleep. Jane was born to Aileen and Maxwell Boggs in March 1930 in Akron, Ohio. In High School, Jane liked math and physics because she wanted to know "how things happen." As Jane progressed through life, she learned that knowing "why things happen" was more important. That started a journey that led her to become a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA. After graduating from Muskingum College in 1952, Jane became a computer operator at Standard Oil of Ohio using her math skills. Jane was also active at church and served as Christian Education Director at several Cleveland area churches. In her early 40s, she was called to become a minister, Jane graduated from Vanderbilt University's School of Theology and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister on June 5, 1977. During her career, Jane served as a minister at the Presbytery of the Western Reserve, at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, Westlake Presbyterian Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church of Amherst, and First Church of Lorain. Jane's ministry also focused on justice and equality. In 1976, with Cleveland facing court-ordered segregation, Jane became an Associate Director of the Cleveland Foundation working on the Greater Cleveland Project, a coalition of about 60 faith-based and community groups that planned for the peaceful desegregation of the schools. Jane joined this effort because, as she wrote at the time, "the injustice and destructiveness of racism has always gripped my heart." While studying at Muskingum College, Jane caught the eye of David Anderson. After graduation, they were married and began a family with four children, Anne Busher (Frank), Jim Anderson (Lilian), Clarke Anderson (Mary), and Doug Anderson (Kim). David preceded Jane in death. During her last days, Jane was surrounded by her children and her nine grandchildren: David, Christopher (Milena), Amy, Max, Aileen, Erin, Sam, Gabbi, and Christofer.

James “Jim” Edward Uszynski, 76 years of age, and a lifetime resident of Lorain County, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2022, following a lengthy illness. 

Born on January 29,1946, Jim lived and worked in Lorain for much of his life. He attended Clearview High School where he met his wife of 56 years, Joanne.  After graduation, he started at quarterback for four years at Muskingum College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree. He later received a Masters degree in education from Cleveland State University.   

Jim was employed for 35 years by Lorain City Schools as a high school special education teacher while also coaching football. Affectionately known as “Coach U”, Jim coached for over fifty years for multiple Lorain County schools before being inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. He loved playing golf, all the Cleveland sports teams, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. 

Jim made a decision to follow Jesus in 1989 and it radically reshaped the rest of his life. He served as a long-time member of Church of the Open Door where he grew in his faith and has been a member of Camden Baptist Church for the last decade. Everyone who knew him knew he was devoted to three things: Joanne and his family, coaching high school football, and sharing his faith in Jesus Christ. 

Survivors include his wife of fifty-six years Joanne Marie Uszynski (nee: Muhich): his children, Edward (Amy) Uszynski of Xenia, Susan (John) Gerlak of New London, and Jennifer (James) Janis of Rocky River; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his brothers, Chet (Sandi) Uszynski of Texas, Tom (Sandy) Uszynski of Washington, and Bob (Pam) Uszynski of Georgia.

He  was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Anne Uszynski (nee: Simko).

June Elaine Rice, 85, went to her heavenly home on November 5, 2022. June was born on April 9, 1937 to Henry and Thelma Spring in Uhrichsville, OhioIn her youth, she was active in Christian Endeavor and Women's Fellowship. She was a graduate of Uhrichsville High school and Muskingum College. June was a dedicated teacher for 30 years. Her teaching journey included time in Columbus, Indiana, Tuscarawas, Midvale, and Uhrichsville, Ohio. Later, she joined Danny Spring and Associates Realty as a real estate broker. She was a lifelong member of the Uhrichsville Moravian Church. As well as a member of Review Club, a 40-year member of College Club, and several card clubs. June enjoyed ceramics, painting, and wood crafting. Her greatest joy was her family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and special times with nieces Linda and Pam, and nephew Stephen. June had lived in the West Michigan area since 2013 with daughter, Lisa. June will be dearly missed by all who knew her. June was preceded in death by: husband, Roy Rice; parents, Henry and Thelma Spring; brother, Danny Spring; and stepson, Gene Rice She is survived by: daughters, Lisa (Tom) Smith, and Amy (Adam) Ritchie; stepdaughters, Terrie (Bryon) Bradshaw, and Cheryl (Eric) Lautzenheiser; sisters, Bette Anne Spring, and Marilyn (Robert) Miller; brother, Bobby (Shari) Spring; sister-in-law, Kathy Spring; as well as, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many caring nieces and nephews.

Cheryl "Cheri" Jean Ament, 76, of Wooster died on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Smithville Western Care Center. She was born June 8, 1946 in Mansfield to Harold and Margaret Clark Teeter. On August 31, 1968, she married John Thomas Ament. He survives. Cheri graduated Magna Cum Laude from Muskingum University and had been a primary school librarian for many years. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic church where she sang in the choir. Cheri loved cats, especially Siamese, working outside and reading fiction. She was an avid stamp collector, enjoyed playing the piano, tennis, working jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and Sudoku. Along with her husband, she is survived by her children Chris (Chris J.) Ament of North Royalton and Laura (Michael) Taylor of Geelong, Australia; grandchildren Alex Ament, Isabelle "Rilie" Taylor and Luke Taylor and a sister Maddie "Barb" O'Callin of Portland, OR. Cheri was preceded in death by her parents. 

Joanne Petersen, age 82, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022 at Kobacker House. She was a graduate of Muskingum College. Mary was an avid gardener, she loved racing her Audi A-3, but her true love was her devotion to her family. Preceded in death by, husband, Kenneth "Pete" Petersen, nephew, Gregory Frohmann, parents, David and Mary Williamson. Survived by, children, Laura (Robert) Krutko, Lisa Shepherd and Erik (Betsy Barnhouse) Petersen, grandchildren, Ashley Krutko, Adam (Ron) Krutko, Courtney (Nick) Samples, Corey (Melanie Patterson) Shepherd and Cassidy Shepherd, sister, Jeanie Williamson, brother, David (Brenda) Williamson, numerous other family and friends.

James F. Yonally, age 93, of North Canton and formerly Hudson and Wilmot, Ohio, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2022. He was surrounded by his loving family. Jim was a graduate of Hoover High School, Muskingum College, Case Western Reserve, and The Ohio State University. He and his beloved wife Dorie had been married 71 years, and have been long time members of the Chapel in North Canton. Always encouraging and supportive, Jim was a loving and devoted husband and father, and a man of deep faith in Jesus Christ. A proud Navy veteran who served during the Korean War, he was also a generous supporter of worthy and important organizations, holding leadership positions in Rotary International, Young Life, the Stark County Dental Society, the Malone College board of trustees and the North Canton School Board, among others.

Jim led a happy and blessed life, and loved traveling the world with Dorie, visiting South America, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and other destinations. Caring for people absolutely defined him as a man. Whether it be over the 50 years in his nearly legendary dental practice, or just giving a kind word to a struggling soul on the street, the lives he touched and blessed are impossible to number.

Jim is survived by his wife Dorie, and their four children, Jill Archer, Jane Eck, Joy Pyles, and Matt Yonally. He never missed a moment he could spend with his 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, whom he counted among his greatest blessings. He also leaves behind his two sisters, Cynthia Hanscom and Virginia Maharry.

Ruth Alice Batchelor Lawson passed this earth unto heaven on August 16, 2019.

She was born and raised in Mt. Gilead, Ohio where she married John Lawson. They moved to Erie, Penn. and began raising their family. The family moved to Lynchburg, Va. and had many fond memories at Timberlake.

Ruth was actively involved at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church as a teacher and in choir and music. She taught at Brookville High School for 19 years in the English department, and coached the girls track team. She spent her final years in Richmond, Va.

She is preceded in death by her husband John Elvin Lawson, Jr.; and her siblings, Harriet Zinn, Lois Batchelor, and Bill Batchelor.

She is survived by her children; Kristie Faison, David Lawson, Annie Mitchum, Daniel Lawson, and Martin Lawson. She had 12 grandchildren & step-grandchildren; Joshua Lawson, Jesse Lawson, Kit Prete, Megan Prete, Sara Rains, Nicole Lawson, Kyle Lawson, Emily Mitchum, Chris Mitchum, Britany Boyce, Dave Henderson, and Chris Henderson. She had 13 great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; Kay Paris, Evelyn Boyce, Margaret Alice Boyce, namesake, Dexter Rains, Brewer Rains, August Mitchum, Taylor Lawson, Lachlan Henderson, Coleman Henderson, Cali Mitchum, Taylor Mitchum, Hannah Henderson & Tristan Henderson.

The greatest joy in Ruth’s life was her loving family. She will live on in all of us.

Richard W. Rider, also known to many as Dick "CC" Rider passed away on October 16, 2022.

Arthur H. Johnstone Jr., 95 , of Clarkston, was resting comfortably, peacefully and listening to hymns and passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022, at Riverview Residential Care in Clarkston. When asked when he was born, Art says with a grin, "On April 4, 1927, at 6:22 a.m. at the Brooklyn Hospital" to Elizabeth and Arthur H. Johnstone Sr. Arthur studied Brooklynese until the sixth grade and was Sewanhaka High School junior class president and Stanforth Principal Award recipient and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was also Ordinary Seaman in the Merchant Marines one summer to Egypt, India and Pakistan. He graduated from Muskingum College at New Concord, Ohio, and was sophomore class president. He also graduated from Pittsburg-Xenia Seminary, which is now known as Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He served Presbyterian churches in Frankfort Springs and Service, Penn.; Canton, Ohio; Barberton, Ohio; Idaho Falls; and First Presbyterian Church of Clarkston, where there was a very active youth program. He and Martha Borton were married in Cleveland and they were later divorced. He moved to Clarkston in 1965, where he served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, where he still attended services regularly. He resigned that post in 1970 and went to work as a minister-at-large and presbytery moderator for several congregations. He was a member of the Presbytery of the Inland Northwest, based in Spokane. In 1970, he became a Real Estate Broker and was the first to receive the Million Dollar Sales Award in Asotin County. Henceforth, he supported himself by real estate alone and gave his ministerial services to many Idaho and Washington communities. He was a member of the Clarkston Rotary Club, where he served as president in 1991 and chairperson of its Salvation Army's Bell Ringing, during which time he rang the bell for 50 consecutive years. He also served as chairperson of the club's first outgoing student exchange. He served on the first board of Lewiston-Clarkston Partners Habitat for Humanity. As an original member of the steering committee for Habitat for Humanity, he raised and gave thousands. The Clarkston Boy's and Girl's Club also received a portion of donated land and Phyllis Charlo were married Jan. 4, 1997, in Clarkston and she passed away in 2009. In his younger years, he especially enjoyed hunting and one of his most recent hobbies was flying drones. As a world traveler, he toured dozens of countries while ever continuing to sell real estate. Among countries that he toured, were Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Djibouti, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Wales. Arthur is survived by his brother, Al (Sharon); his four children, Art III (Jan), Tim (Brenda), Anne (Alan) and Sam (Loretta); and his ten grandchildren, Jamie, Jesse (Amanda), Nicole, Josh (Andrea), Jessica, Beth (Chris), Alison (Chris), Courtney (Jorge), Crystal (Justin) and Joyce (David). He is also survived by his 17 great-grandchildren, Conner, Lewis, Kaydence, Brandyn, Reese, Connor, Mackenzie, Gabriel, Clara, Rowan, Brayden, Lucas, Justin, Paige, Saphira, Arya and Taylor. Additionally, he is survived by his nieces and nephews, Leann, Karen, Tom, Peter and Linda, and grandnieces, Gabriella and Leslie. When asked, "How are you?" Art's answer would be, "Thankful." 

Gerald Lynn (Jerry) Williams, 82, passed away on October 11, 2022 after a 16-month battle with myasthenia gravis, a rare neurological disease. He continued to surprise medical staff and caregivers with his tenacity of spirit and will to live. In the last week of life he contracted COVID and passed away peacefully with his wife of 55 years and his children by his bedside. Stories of Jerry-isms have provided his family with comfort and laughter throughout these challenging months. Jerry's car could never pass a garage sale, finding treasures in others' trash. He invented the side hustle before it was a thing and often recruited his unwitting family to join him. His children remember one particular Christmas when he pulled over and purchased an entire truckload of wreaths at a discount and immediately sent his children out in the neighborhood to sell them door to door at a profit that the kids kept. His children credit his schemes with instilling in them a strong work ethic, a fearlessness to fail and an inability to quit. Professionally, Jerry brought these traits to Tumpeer Chemical Company and Tumpeer Manufacturing of which he was President and CEO. Deeply invested in his chosen field, he was honored to serve as president with both the Chicago Rubber Group and the Wisconsin Rubber Group. Nationally, he was recognized for his 50+ years of affiliation with Manufacturers Agents National Association (MANA), his 25+ years of service by C.W. Brabender Instruments, Inc., a certificate of service from the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society and with the Queens' Award for Enterprise for international trade. Jerry loved his college fiercely and lobbied tirelessly for his children and/or grandchildren to attend Muskingum University. His daughter accompanied him to campus when he spoke to chemistry students and received the distinguished alumni award for chemistry. Jerry earned an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. A long suffering Chicago sports fan, Jerry cheered on his Bears and Cubbies with equal fervor and volume whether from the stadium or from his family room chair. He was active as a youth soccer coach with Palatine Park District and a Scout leader with Pack 335 (Palatine). An Eagle Scout with palms, he was immensely proud when his son earned the same honor. Jerry regularly volunteered with Pads Homeless Shelter. An avid golfer, Jerry considered a day on the links with friends a day well spent. He golfed four times the weekend before his unexpected illness. His years in leagues at Palatine Hills Golf Course and Makray Memorial Golf Club resulted in many dear friends who his family hopes he's playing with in heaven. His foursome traveled to Florida for the Bonita Springs Open, an excuse he concocted for a trip with friends. A part-time resident of Bonita Springs, Jerry loved to help the local economy by trying new restaurants. He loved enjoying a meal with his wife by the water, a perfect Rob Roy in hand. Jerry traveled extensively with his wife Wendy and loved to share stories of their adventures from riding camels in the shadow of the pyramids in Egypt to seeing fields of tulips in Amsterdam. Jerry is survived by his wife Wendy, son Michael Williams, daughters Ashley (Charles) Ellis and Carolyn (Daniel) English. He proudly bragged about his five grandsons to anyone with ears; Ian, Phinneas, and Angus Ellis; Benjamin and Tommy Williams. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents James (Jane) Williams and Coletta Burger, sister Donna Stiles and countless friends.

John F. MacMillan, 85, of Xenia, passed away Friday, October 14, 2022, at Xenia Health and Rehab. He was born May 29, 1937 at Springfield Community Hospital to John Rankin and Lenora Skinnell MacMillan. He was a member of Xenia United Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder. He also served as elder of the Presbyterian Church of Hillsboro and Cedarville United Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife Jeanette Harner MacMillan of 61 years, daughter, Linda Sue MacMillan Sharrett and son-in-law, Dr. Kevin Sharrett of Bowersville, grandchildren; Megan Sharrett Pike (Ben) of Sabina; Caleb Sharrett (Breannna) of Jamestown; Logan Sharrett (Ashley) of Bowersville, great-grandchildren; Kaden James, Cordelia Marie, and Chloe Ann Pike; Liam Parker, and Tinley Susann, Reed Clayton, and Luke Sharrett, sisters, Janet Sessions, Safety Harbor, Fla, and Judith Quiram (Dennis), Roanoke, Ill, sister-in-laws, Diane Harner, Cedarville, and Janet Harner Hartzell, Xenia. He was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law Tom and Lula Harner, sister, Jane Acri, brother-in-laws, Rev. Bill Harsin, James Sessions, Ronald Harner, and Pat Acri. He graduated from Cedarville High School, Muskingum College with a BS in Education and from Xavier University with a Masters in School Administration. He began his teaching career at Madison South High School of London, Ohio for four years; then to Cedarville High School for three years and to Greeneview Local Schools for 23 years where he was teacher, Administrative Assistant for two years and Superintendent of Schools for the last nine years. He was basketball coach for 15 years and his 1961 Madison South team was a state semifinalist and in 2013, he and his Madison South team were inducted into the Madison Plains (Madison South) Hall of Fame. After retiring from education he worked ten years for Clemens Nelson, and Associates out of Columbus and Cincinnati. In his retirement years he drove vehicles 12 years for Terry Tobey at Key Chrysler in Xenia. He was a past member of the Jamestown Lions Club, a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Springfield Lodge # 51, and past president of the Greene County Retired Teachers Association. He chaired and served on numerous church committees. He also chaired and served on the Eagles Way Homeowners Association Board. He played in the Senior Golf League at WGC, and Couples Golf Club at Locust Hills. He also played in two card clubs, the Cedarville and Xenia Card Clubs. He played in the couple's card club as well. He loved to fish with his buddies Steve, Tony, and Ron. John will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. 

Shirley R. Counselman, 91, of Tiffin, passed away at 8:46 a.m., Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Bridge Hospice Care Center in Bowling Green. Shirley was born December 23, 1930, in Toledo, to the late Wilmer and E. Ruth (Young) Markley. She married Donald R. Counselman on December 28, 1952 at Bethany Memorial Church and he preceded her in death on May 30, 2009. Survivors include her children, Randall (Sue) Counselman of Lake Geneva, WI, Ruth (James) Harnden of Brookfield, WI and Susan (Mark) Westphal of Bowling Green, nine grandchildren, Ginette (Corey) Mueller, Bethany (Robert) Schmelzer, Joseph Harnden, Matthew Harnden, Kathryn (David) Beyer, Nicholas (Karie) Westphal, Jason (Shellie) Lawrence, Alexis (David) Skoczyn and Travis (Jael) Lawrence and eleven great-grandchildren. Shirley worked as a home economics teacher at Riley Township in Clyde and later retired as an Elementary School Teacher for Tiffin City Schools. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Tiffin where she enjoyed signing in the choir and being an active member of the United Methodist Women. Shirley graduated from Bethany High School in West Virginia and later graduated from Muskingum College. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and husband. 

Lucinda "Cindy" Jean Casey, age 80, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on October 8, 2022. Born on September 3, 1942 in Hamburg, New York, Cindy was the daughter of Richard and Alma Jean Miller. Cindy earned her Bachelor's Degree from Muskingum University. She was fluent in French and Spanish, which she used while traveling alone through Europe for three months. After graduation, Cindy worked as a systems analyst at Mellon State Bank. She then attended Indiana University where she earned her Master's Degree and met her husband of 53 years, Paul Casey. Following her time at Indiana University, she served as Assistant Dean of Students at Waldorf College, and later was director of the Foster Grandparents Program in North Vernon, Indiana. Cindy worked for Ivy Tech Community College in Columbus for 33 years. Cindy started her career at Ivy Tech as Admissions Coordinator, assisted in development of the then emerging Bloomington Campus, and ended her career as Executive Director of Administration. Cindy enjoyed playing the clarinet in the Columbus City Band, and served on many civic boards throughout her many years in Columbus. She was selfless and giving of her time towards her community, church, and family. Cindy is survived by her husband, Paul Casey; son, Brian Casey (spouse Heavenly); daughter, Laura Cox (spouse Rick); grandsons, Mark and Logan Casey; step-grandson, Jaden Cox; brother, Willard Miller; sisters, Debbie Gabler, Melissa Miller, and Jennifer Keller-Miller. 

Donald LeRoy Gilbert, Sr., 85, passed away on Sept 29. He was born May 27, 1937 in Ridgway. Pa but was raised in Latrobe. A 1955 graduate of Latrobe High School and a 1959 graduate of Muskingum College in Ohio, he gained employment in advertising and public relations in various Pittsburgh firms. Having started magic at age twelve, he became a full time magician and moved to Ligonier in 1977. Working under the stage name, Dunaldo the Magician, he spent the remainder of his life performing magic for hundreds of organizations, private parties and corporate trade shows around the country and the world. A longtime member of Heritage United Methodist Church of Ligonier he served as usher and on a number of committees. In addition, he was a 48 year noble in F&AM Masonic Lodge 331 and Ceremonial Magician for the Syria Shrine of Pittsburgh. His personal interests included a love of antique cars, of which he had a number. He served as president of the Laurel Highlands Antique Automobile Club of America and was a charter member. He loved to travel and spent many weeks in his motor home and camping with good friends. He and his wife and family managed to visit all fifty states during their marriage. Cruising became a yearly event later in life. Don was a great husband and father and grandfather. He was able to follow his dream of providing for his family while entertaining thousands of adults and kids with his wonderful magic. All while remaining true to himself and a model for others. He will be greatly missed. Don was a lifetime member of The Society of American Magicians, International Brotherhood of Magicians, BPOE Elks and the American Legion, where he served as Past Commander. He is preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy Merl and Gladys Gilbert of Latrobe. He is survived by his wife, Dawn, of 51 years: son Donald Gilbert, Jr and granddaughter Estella: son David Gilbert and wife Sarah and granddaughters Eva, Lily and Anna: and sister Mildred and husband Robert Carlson of Arizona. 

Geraldine R. Nichols, 92, of Coshocton peacefully passed away at her home on Sunday October 2, 2022. She was born in Coshocton on August 13, 1930, to the late George D. and Grace S. (Randles) Fisher. Geraldine was a devoted member of The Presbyterian Church of Coshocton where she attended since 1939. She graduated from Conesville High School in the class of 1948, and then attended The Ohio State University for one year. Geraldine graduated from Muskingum University and began her teaching career in 1955 at Fresno Elementary School. Throughout her teaching career, she also taught at Conesville and Keene Elementary in Coshocton County and French Run Elementary in Columbus. In 1980-1981 she was a Jennings Scholar to Capital University in Columbus. After retiring from teaching in River View School District, she was employed as Historian in Roscoe Village from 1986-1990. From 1991-2000 she resided in Naples, Florida. Her affiliations included the Ohio Teachers Association, Coshocton County Retired Teachers Association, Coshocton Historical Club, and Coshocton County Genealogy Society. Family, friends, church, children, and teaching were the love of her life. Geraldine is survived by her son Jim (Terrie) Woodie; granddaughter Tricia (Troy) Balo; grandson Dusty (Michelle) Woodie; four great-grandsons Ethan, Wesley, and Riley Woodie and Zach Balo; one great-granddaughter Haley Balo; six nieces and eight nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her four sisters, Wathena Krieder, Colleen Hammersley, Pauline Hootman and Patricia Saxton; three brothers, George Fisher, Dewey Fisher and infant brother, Vincent Fisher.

Annis E. Sauerbrey, 80, of Dresden, Ohio died Tuesday morning, September 27, 2022 in the emergency department of Genesis Hospital in Zanesville, Ohio. Born June 4, 1942 in Dresden she was a daughter of the late Francis and Marguerite (Howell) Lacy and was a 1960 graduate of Dresden Jefferson High School. Annis was also a graduate of Ohio Northern University where she received a bachelor's degree in education. In 1993 she received her master's degree in education from Muskingum University. Annis retired from Tri-Valley Schools where she taught seventh grade English for many years and later she taught fourth grade at Frazeysburg Elementary School. Prior to her teaching at Tri-Valley, she was Physical Education instructor at Ridgewood Schools and Coshocton Schools. Annis was a member of Dresden Presbyterian Church; the Jefferson Alumni Scholarship Committee and several area book clubs and quilt clubs. She loved travelling, watching sports and watching The Hallmark Channel. She received her most enjoyment when she was with her loving family. Annis especially enjoyed watching her grandsons running track and cross-country events. Surviving is one son, Wade (Letitia) Sauerbrey of Dresden; two daughters, Sara Elizabeth (Ken) Buch of Germantown, Maryland and Suzan (Perry) Harden of Findlay, Ohio and three grandsons, Caden Sauerbrey, Nathan Sauerbrey and Michael Harden. Also surviving are two sisters, Judy (Ronnie Hittle) Zimmer of Cambridge, Ohio and Dixie Lacy of Texas and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Annis was preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 55 years, Wilbur H. Sauerbrey whom she married June 20, 1964 and who died May 12, 2019. 

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Ned Spencer 68, of North Canton, formally of Duncan Falls on Oct 2nd, 2022.Ned was born on March 6th 1954, to Anna Mae (Long) Spencer and the late Charles J. Spencer. Ned was a 1972 Graduate of Philo High School and was a letterman in baseball, football, and basketball. He was a 1978 Graduate of Muskingum University, where he played college baseball. Following his passion for baseball, Ned played for the Junior and Senior Pioneers. Ned was inducted into the Muskingum Valley Old Timers Association Baseball Hall of fame in 1994. Ned went on to Coach Baseball for Philo High School. Ned retired after 34 years as a supervisor from Muskingum County Job and Family Services. Ned is survived by his wife Dorothy Armour Spencer of 22 years, his Mother Anna Mae Spencer, two daughters Brianne (Adam) Shook, Dalynne Spencer, one son Christian Cook and his Grandson Spencer Shook, as well as his fur baby Jag. He is preceded in death by his Father, Charles J. Spencer, his Grandparents Charles Oscar and Lucille Spencer and William and Gertrude Long. His dear friend and fishing buddy Jeff Bennett. The simplest pleasures in life brought him great joy. Ned loved his annual fishing trip to Canada, golfing, and spending time on his house boat at Atwood Lake, where many great friends and memories were made.

Helen {Rosenberg} Neely passed away early Thursday morning, September 29 at approximately 7:00 A.M. For the past five weeks, Helen was hospitalized with a weakened heart and an inoperable form of cancer. Helen was born in 1942 to Veronica and Max Rosenberg. She is survived by her family: brother, Dick Rosenberg (Cathy), and her nephew, Dan. The family wants to thank Helen's numerous friends from Ellet High School, Muskingum College, Springfield Public Schools, her book club, her bridge club and the Green Y. They were an important part of her life.

Elaine Goddard, 91, a resident of New Philadelphia, died September 30, 2022 at Park Village Southside following a period of declining health. Elaine was born in Flushing, Belmont County, OH on November 19, 1930, a daughter of the late Floyd H. and Luella (Arn) Whiston. Elaine was a graduate of Flushing High School Class of 1948, and attended Muskingum College in New Concord. She was a member of Broadway Global Methodist Church at New Philadelphia for more than 60 years. Music was Elaine's passion and she served as organist and pianist for her church for many years, as well as being a member of the Wesleyan Choir. She was the pianist for the gospel trio Glorybound, who sang their praises all over NE Ohio for almost 30 years. Elaine was also a former member of the Fortnightly Music Club. Elaine retired in 1998 from W. E. Quicksall and Associates in New Philadelphia after 19 years of service. She filled her retirement years with family activities, visiting friends in nursing homes as well as shut-ins and writing many notes of encouragement to those in need. Elaine was also an accomplished seamstress. In addition to her parents and husband, Harry, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David Lee Whiston and Donald Floyd Whiston; her sisters, Doris Schlanz and June Casto; and her grandson Ryan Storrie. She is survived by her children, Rod (Lynette) Beaber of North Canton, Rita (Mike) Storrie of Greer, SC, and Ben (Cathy) Beaber of Columbus; grandchildren, Kalina and Matthew Beaber, both of North Canton, Lauren (Jim) Story of Charleston, SC, Scott (Patricia) Beaber of Columbus and Erin (Matt) Sawka of Richfield, OH; step-children, Randy Goddard of New Philadelphia and Tracy Goddard of Midvale; step-granddaughters, Lori Laizure of New Philadelphia and Tracy (Bob) Russell of Dover; step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. 

Mary Shackleton Demling, 69, passed away on September 25th, 2022, surrounded by family, after a courageous 2 year battle with cancer. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Mary was the daughter of Allen and Rachel Shackleton. Her parents instilled in her a strong sense of family, a love of the outdoors, sports, and education. Mary attended Harriton High School in Rosemont, PA, and received her Bachelor's degree in Education from Muskingum University in New Concord, OH, where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Theta sorority. It was at Muskingum her life changed forever when she met John Demling in a chance encounter by the school pond. The couple were married 47 years at the time of her passing. After graduating college Mary moved to Glen Ellyn, IL to be closer to John. Here she began her career in education, teaching 2nd graders at Palisades Elementary School. When she became pregnant with her first son, Allen, she decided to take a leave from teaching to raise him, much to the sorrow of her students. Son Morgan and daughter Kara followed, and the family settled into the home Mary would spend the rest of her life in raising and educating her three children. When the kids grew up, moved out and graduated college, Mary returned to teaching, this time at Pilgrim Place and Rainbow Place preschool, finding great joy in helping to shape the early lives of her students. Mary had a large personality that made it almost impossible to ignore. She never met a stranger that she couldn't chat with, and she could make sure there would never be a lull in conversation. This infectious spirit led to many lifelong friendships that culminated in book groups, investing clubs, game nights, group travels, and more. Mary's love of education extended into her philanthropic endeavors, when she joined PEO, an organization dedicated to providing women with both financial and moral support to attend higher education. Besides the ability to help other women, PEO also led to many lifelong friendships that Mary kept up for decades. Mary kept herself busy with many personal pursuits and hobbies. She stayed active by walking, often with her dachshund Dolly in tow (and sometimes even pushed in a stroller). Her favorite spots were Lake Ellyn, Panfish Park, and the Morton Arboretum. In addition, she was a voracious reader, borrowing upwards of 5 books at a time from the library, often sending her favorites to her children to read. She was often glued to the TV when the Bears, Bulls, Cubs, or any of her children's alma maters played. One of her most joyous moments was the Chicago Cubs World Series win in 2016, propelling her into a full on dance of joy. Later in life Mary found great comfort in attending to her gardens and decorating her house as the seasons changed. Most of all Mary loved being with her family. Whether spring break trips with her grandkids, summer trips to their Wisconsin cottage, or Christmas with the extended family, nothing brought more joy to her than being with loved ones. Mary is survived by her husband, John W. Demling; son, Allen Demling; son, Morgan Demling and wife, Kelly Nesler; daughter, Kara Demling; grandchildren, Miah Nesler, Logan Holmes and Sam Demling; sister, Kay (Bill) Britton; and brother, Jim (Lynne) Shackleton; brother-in-law, Gordon Demling; and 9 nieces and nephews and their children. She is preceded in death by her parents, Allen Roy Shackleton and Rachel Harris Shackleton; her sister, Ann Harris Shackleton Cook.

Samuel Wherry Cunningham, age 95, of 76795 Valley Knoll Road, Flushing (Piedmont) died at 3:25 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2022 in the Harrison County Home, Cadiz, Ohio where he had been a resident for thirteen months. He was born March 6, 1927 in Londonderry Township, Guernsey County, Ohio; a son of the late Lester Zellars Cunningham and Mary Margaret Tedrick Cunningham. Sam was the Salutatorian of the 1944 graduating class of Freeport High School. He attended Muskingum College in New Concord prior to induction into the United States Army and served in the occupation forces in Germany. He was discharged in November of 1946. He graduated from Ohio State University in Columbus in 1949 with a degree in agriculture. Sam was a dairy farmer most of his lifetime and was a member of the Ohio Jersey Breeders Association for many years. His passion for farming and agricultural education and legislation was evident by his involvement with agricultural organizations. He was a member of the Harrison County Farm Bureau where he was inducted into the Farm Bureau Hall of Fame and was also inducted into the Harrison County Soil and Water Conservation District Hall of Fame. He served as a member on the Harrison County CIC Board for several years. He was on the school boards of Lakeland Local School District and Harrison Hills City School District. He also was a rural mail carrier for Flushing Route 1 for thirteen years. The Nottingham Presbyterian Church was a major part of his life. He was a member, an elder, and a trustee and also involved with the Muskingum Valley Presbytery. Sam was also a member of the Moorefield Township Volunteer Fire Department where he served as treasurer for many years. On June 25, 1949 in the Antrim Presbyterian Church, he married to Margaret Lois Caldwell Cunningham. She died March 13, 2017. Sam was also survived by two sons, Philip L. (Sue) Cunningham of Prospect and David M. (Barb) of Flushing; three grandchildren, Trish Levering of Richwood, Danielle (Ryan) Barr of Lewisburg, and Sam (Renae) Cunningham of New Concord; and five great-grandchildren, Shad Cunningham, Ella Cunningham, Paul Cunningham, Ben Cunningham, and Blair Levering. 

Mary Beth Christman, 69, passed away on September 15, 2022. She was born in Columbus, Ohio on November 8, 1952 and was raised in London, Ohio. Mary Beth attended both Muskingum College and Ohio State University before earning her degree from Ohio University. Mary Beth devoted her life to raising her family. She had an artistic side and enjoyed making crafts for her home and others. She struggled with health issues for a number of years and is thankfully now at peace, reunited with her parents, Thomas and Winona Slattery. She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Jennifer Christman and Julia Christman; sister, Diedra Lenhart; aunt, Helen Norris; and several grandchildren and extended relatives. 

Elizabeth Whitehouse Perdue, always known as Kay, 78, a resident of Orlando of 44 years passed away peacefully on September 5th, 2022. She was born in Vermillion, South Dakota at Ellsworth Airforce Base to Wesley C. Whitehouse (US Air Force) and Hazel Bradford Whitehouse. Kay graduated from Muskingum University and earned a master's in education at the University of Pittsburgh. She was married to Henry Fred Perdue and worked as a high school teacher in between raising her children. Prior to retiring, she taught computer networking at Seminole Community College for 5 years. Kay was an active member of the local recovery community for many years, a wonderful mother, friend and sponsor to many and this January 10, 2023 would have celebrated 40 years as a Friend of Bill W. Kay is survived by two children, Kurt Robbins (Orlando, FL) and Vicki Hawhee (Indian Rocks Beach, FL), and 4 grandchildren, Austin, Lauren, Jessica and Spencer. 

Dianne Munt, age 88, passed away at home on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022. Dianne was born in Mt. Pleasant, MI and later moved down to Birmingham, MI. Dianne graduated from Muskingum College in New Concord, OH, majoring in secondary education. After college, she taught in Alpena and Grand Rapids before settling down in Ann Arbor, MI teaching middle school there. While on sabbatical, she found her husband, Dick in California and brought him back to Ann Arbor. Dianne and Dick shared many recreational activities together, most notably sailing, skiing, running and bicycling. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Richard (Dick) W. Munt; brother, Kent Rathbun; brother-in-law, Joseph Hill; and several cousins.

Esther Lou Jones, age 97, of Zanesville passed to the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on September 18, 2022. Esther was born to Merrill and Mary (Vickers) Cox in the Cox Family Farmhouse near Trinway where she spent her childhood on the farm. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Dresden, OH, attended Asbury College in Kentucky, and graduated from Muskingum University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She began her teaching career at Chandlersville Elementary in Chandlersville, OH where she lived with her loving husband and children. She continued her career in education in the Zanesville City Schools at Wilson Elementary until her retirement in 1990 after 30 years of service. Our beloved mother and grandmother was very healthy and active well into her 90's as she worked out at the gym three days a week, enjoyed time with friends and would faithfully visit those in assisted living and health care facilities. Esther was also an active member of Central Trinity United Methodist Church of Zanesville since 1973. Esther is survived by her children: Carolyn (Rick) Searls of Taylors, SC, Phillip (Janet Jones) of Mount Vernon, OH, David Jones of Thornville, OH, Kathy (Bill) Godwin of Zanesville, OH, and Jeff (Robin) Jones of Leesburg, VA. Also surviving are a brother, Lloyd Cox of Fort Meyers, FL, eight grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Clement Jones, Jr.; grandsons: Todd Godwin, Brian Jones and Brent Jones; granddaughter Amy Jones; a daughter-in law Linda Jones; and siblings: Forest Cox, Max Cox and Gertrude Chaney. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Central Ohio for their compassionate care of Esther, as well as their encouragement and support of those family members who cared for her. 

Janice Lee Hoffmann (Neill) of Plum passed away peacefully from complications of a stroke on September 22, 2022, at the age of 81. Jan was born in Baldwin, PA on April 27, 1941, daughter of the late Martha J. Neill (Miller) and Everett H. Neill, Sr. Jan grew up in Baldwin, PA and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1959. She went on to graduate from Muskingum (College) University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work. Jan met her husband Clarence A. Hoffmann, Jr. on a blind date at Muskingum in 1960. Clarence was a year younger than Jan and had to ask an upper classman to a school dance. They married on June 13, 1964, and soon after moved to Wheeling, WV where Jan worked as a social worker until the birth of their first child, Stacy. The family eventually settled in Plum where son Tod and daughter Shea were born. As a stay-at-home mom Jan took her children to their many activities and became involved in the community, becoming president of the East Plum Women's Club. Jan studied dance as a child and passed on that love of dance to her two daughters, Stacy and Shea. She nurtured both of them on to full college performing group scholarships. Jan also worked for Giant Eagle for many years as a claims secretary. She was an avid bridge player, making many friends and playing several days per week in many different bridge groups. She was a collector of bells and dolls and in her later years she enjoyed car rides with Clarence where they visited estate sales and flea markets. They often took weekend trips to visit friends and family. Jan always had a quick smile and kind words to all she came in contact with, making many friends throughout all her years. Friends and family say she was "just a sweetheart". Jan was preceded in death by her parents, along with brother Everett H. Neill, Jr. and sister-in-law Paula L. Neill (Prince)She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Clarence, of Plum and three children, Stacy (Peter) Sylvester, Tod (Kara) Hoffmann and Shea (Jim) Murtaugh, and her two grandsons, Garrett Sylvester and Tyler Hoffmann. She is further survived by her sisters-in-law Lynn (the late Bruce) Heckel and Marcia (Robert) Chocinsky, and nieces and nephew, Terri, Dawn, Robert and their families. Affectionately known as Jannie, she is further survived by numerous cousins within her mother's family.

Samuel Wherry Cunningham, age 95, of 76795 Valley Knoll Road, Flushing (Piedmont) died at 3:25 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2022 in the Harrison County Home, Cadiz, Ohio where he had been a resident for thirteen months. He was born March 6, 1927 in Londonderry Township, Guernsey County, Ohio; a son of the late Lester Zellars Cunningham and Mary Margaret Tedrick Cunningham. Sam was the Salutatorian of the 1944 graduating class of Freeport High School. He attended Muskingum College in New Concord prior to induction into the United States Army and served in the occupation forces in Germany. He was discharged in November of 1946. He graduated from Ohio State University in Columbus in 1949 with a degree in agriculture. Sam was a dairy farmer most of his lifetime and was a member of the Ohio Jersey Breeders Association for many years. His passion for farming and agricultural education and legislation was evident by his involvement with agricultural organizations. He was a member of the Harrison County Farm Bureau where he was inducted into the Farm Bureau Hall of Fame and was also inducted into the Harrison County Soil and Water Conservation District Hall of Fame. He served as a member on the Harrison County CIC Board for several years. He was on the school boards of Lakeland Local School District and Harrison Hills City School District. He also was a rural mail carrier for Flushing Route 1 for thirteen years. The Nottingham Presbyterian Church was a major part of his life. He was a member, an elder, and a trustee and also involved with the Muskingum Valley Presbytery. Sam was also a member of the Moorefield Township Volunteer Fire Department where he served as treasurer for many years. On June 25, 1949 in the Antrim Presbyterian Church, he married to Margaret Lois Caldwell Cunningham. She died March 13, 2017. Sam was also survived by two sons, Philip L. (Sue) Cunningham of Prospect and David M. (Barb) of Flushing; three grandchildren, Trish Levering of Richwood, Danielle (Ryan) Barr of Lewisburg, and Sam (Renae) Cunningham of New Concord; and five great-grandchildren, Shad Cunningham, Ella Cunningham, Paul Cunningham, Ben Cunningham, and Blair Levering. 

Mary Beth Christman, 69, passed away on September 15, 2022. She was born in Columbus, Ohio on November 8, 1952 and was raised in London, Ohio. Mary Beth attended both Muskingum College and Ohio State University before earning her degree from Ohio University. Mary Beth devoted her life to raising her family. She had an artistic side and enjoyed making crafts for her home and others. She struggled with health issues for a number of years and is thankfully now at peace, reunited with her parents, Thomas and Winona Slattery. She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Jennifer Christman and Julia Christman; sister, Diedra Lenhart; aunt, Helen Norris; and several grandchildren and extended relatives.

Willard Rae Mills, Jr., 69, of Wintersville, OH, passed away January 4, 2019 at Trinity Medical Center West, Steubenville.

He was born November 21, 1949 in Steubenville, OH, a son of the late Willard R. Mills, Sr. and Virginia (Lassiter) Mills.

Willard was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church.

He was an avid follower of Steubenville Big Red and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Willard was a devoted family man. He was a teacher, coach, and funeral director.

Willard is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Mills of Wintersville, OH; sons, Bryan (Katie) Mills of Steubenville, OH; daughters, Lisa (Steve) Jolly of Mason, OH, Tiffany Pierro of Steubenville, OH, Jennifer (Todd) Blackburn of Wintersville, OH, and Kristen Mills of Fairborn, OH; sister, Peggy Stout of Pittsburgh, PA; 9 grandchildren, Jessica and Matthew Jolly, Michael and Mia Pierro, Cooper and Nolan Blackburn, Dugan, Carmen, and Mae Mills.

William L. Kelly, Ph.D. (1962), son of Donald Wayne and Gertrude Campbell Kelly (1933) passed away September 8, 2022.  In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by dear wife Carol J. (Saurer) Kelly (1963), who passed away in July 2019. Throughout his career, Bill was known as a leader, innovator and pioneer in polymer technology applications across many industries.  These engagements included several benchmark patents registered. With personal interests spanning organic gardening, culinary arts, woodworking, wine, music, philosophy, theology, science and Information Technology, Bill was a lifelong student of “everything”, an avid hobbyist and entrepreneur, and enjoyed a good debate as well as a good prank.

Carol spent her career in education, staying busy teaching remedial reading and French while raising three children. A lifelong Francophile, Carol loved her numerous trips to France and treasured her visits and correspondence with several lifelong friends in France. While a debilitating stroke ended her ability to work at age 48, Carol remained active in church and social life, and greatly enjoyed her church missions work, including regular mission trips to Columbus to teach English to refugees.

Bill and Carol are survived by children, Patrick (Sheila), Christopher (Stacie), and Kara (Philip), brother Lewis (1965 / Linda McConagha, 1966), sister, Lenna Kelly (Ken) Calairi (1972), and brothers Gilbert Saurer, James (Delores) Saurer, and Philip (Judy) Saurer).

Paul L. "Pete" Taylor, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, surrounded by family.

He was born on September 9, 1940, in Bellaire, Ohio the son of Loring Paul Taylor and Helen Cale Taylor. Pete graduated from Muskingum University after receiving a bachelor's degree in Sociology. Pete resided in Conneaut since 1966, after residing in the Dayton area in his younger years. He retired from R.W. Sidley, where he worked in sales.

Pete was a Member of the Conneaut Elk's Lodge #256, Moose Lodge #472 and the Evergreen F&A Masonic Lodge #222, where he was a 32nd Degree Mason.

Pete enjoyed taking his street rods to area car shows. Along with his wife Peggy, they enjoyed rescuing Bassett Hounds and wintering in Florida. He also enjoyed playing a round of golf and rooting for the Florida Seminoles and the Cleveland Indians and Browns.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret E. "Peggy" Taylor, whom he married on November 30, 1974 in East Springfield, Pennsylvania; children, Lynn L. Rebera, Loring Paul "Buzz" Taylor, II and Myles H. (Tina) Taylor,  Scott W. (Brook) Altier, Timothy A. (Julie) Altier, and Todd M. (Robin) Altier; grandchildren, Alexis and Spencer Altier, Alex and Buzzy Taylor, Tony and Justin Santiago, Ethan Taylor, Aidan and Nolan Altier; and a great-grandson, Finn.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Karen Horton Taylor.
 

Former Ohio resident Barbara Kay Jerman, 79 passed away at home August 24, 2022 after a long battle with cancer.

At her request, there will be no visitation, ceremony or memorial service. A private burial will be held by family at Greenlawn Cemetery in Johnstown, Ohio.

Barb was born December 28, 1942 in Dover Ohio to Otto and Hazel Walker. She graduated Sandusky High School and went on to get an education degree from Muskingham College. she taught in both the Sandusky school system as well as Worthington school system. Her favorite age to teach were her 3rd grade students.

She married her high school sweetheart, Dan Jerman, on August 20, 1966 and lived in Columbus Ohio throughout their whole married life. Her favorite activity was gardening and always had such beautiful gardens each year. She also loved her cats, bird watching and watching nature.

She moved to Middleton, Wi. in 2018 to be closer to her niece and family.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dan and sister, Carolyn Bracy.

She is survived by her niece, Deb (Buzz) Menz, nephew Kevin ( Deborah) Bracy, grand niece Celia (Matt) Parsons, grand nephew Nathan Menz and great great niece and nephew Abby and Charlie Parsons.

Ulster fraternity brothers, family and friends of David W. Litt ’78 established a memorial fund in Dave’s honor. The David W. Litt Memorial Fund recently granted $1,650 scholarships to Nathan Robey and Paige Hannum for the 22-23 academic year. Grants are given to students who demonstrate a marked improvement in their academic performance while at Muskingum and who are involved in leadership activities or otherwise active in campus life.
