Presentations
Here are a list of personal and professional presentations I've made. Most of the artifacts here are PowerPoint type presentations. No good notes available for a web site in the early 90's when I started doing these.
Professional
Innovative Financial Reporting - Ohio Association of College
and University Business Officers (OACUBO), Denison University,
Granville, OH
I asked some colleagues to present at the 2008 annual meeting and agreed to assist. What I developed was a
long introduction to the presentation based on my
MISST work. We were at the beginning of the meeting, so I used this
as a sort of call to action to get the participants thinking about
acting on the ideas presented and how to continue to allow innovation
into their work.
Business Process Improvement - Ohio Bursars Association,
Columbus, OH
This was the presentation that wasn't. I was traveling to Columbus to
present this along with the Bursar from Miami University of Ohio but an
ice storm and a near collision on I-70 turned me around. The
presentation borrowed from the material I used in the Accounting 420
class below.
Using Colleague and Excel - Great Lakes Users Group
Conference, Toledo, OH
The Muskingum Registrar and I presented a session on how to move data
from the Datatel Colleague database (used by Muskingum) to Excel. It was
such a popular session, that we were actually asked back the following
year.
Purchasing Cards - Great Lakes Users Group Conference, Toledo, OH
This new process accomplished wonders for the operations of the Business
Office at Muskingum. But there seemed to be a lot of resistance to this
idea among my peers. This was a presentation to a user group on the
concept.
Purchasing Cards Training - Muskingum College, New Concord, OH
As part of our implementation of this new process to the campus
community, I developed and presented a session on how purchasing cards
worked and how we would use the reporting tool to all the department
heads at the College. We did this in groups of about 6 people to allow
for questions and hands on work with the reporting tool.
EY Trial Balance to Fast-Tax - Ernst & Young, Cleveland, OH
I developed a presentation for a tool Ernst & Young developed to move
data from the trial balance tool we used in our audit work to the
Fast-Tax system used for tax preparation.
- Besides being my first professional presentation, a big challenge was that the audit group used the Mac and tax used PC. So for the training, at the E&Y training center in Cleveland, we set up a room with a Mac and PC side by side.
- We then paired up an audit and tax person at each station. If you aren't familiar with a large CPA firm, there aren't many times where audit and tax interact. The goal of this was to allow each to have some understanding of what the other does.
Instructional / Teaching
Accounting 301 - Intermediate Accounting
My first full teaching opportunity presented itself when one of the
accounting faculty took a medical leave in the middle of the semester. I
was then able to repeat in this role the following year.
Accounting 420 - Accounting Information Systems
This course was exciting for me as I was given the opportunity to
essentially design the course. The faculty were looking for a change in
the course. I selected a text, designed the projects and selected a
hands on practice set in Microsoft's Great Plains Dynamics. I was also
able to apply some business process improvement methodology I learned at
Muskingum.
Entrepreneurial Technology - A proposal for a new program
Developed for my final MISST project, this is a
proposal for a new academic program. The program can be offered as a
major in an undergraduate program for either a bachelor's or associate's
degree, or the core of it could stand alone as a training program. More
information is in this
document. I am
also working on how the course might look in an
online environment.
Personal Finance
This may be one of the areas of my work of which I am most proud. This started at a suggestion (by me) to the head of the First Year program at Muskingum that we observed many students in the Business Office at the College did not have much of a grasp of even basic money concepts like writing a check. The response was an offer to write a chapter of the text used in the First Year Seminar programs.
- "Personal Economics for College Students" Articles in Morris, J.A, Naour, P.J., Williamson R.J. ed. "Transitions: Bridging the Centuries, A Guidebook and Reading for First-Year Seminar." Acton, MA: Tapestry Press Ltd. 2000, 2001
- "Student Loans" (w/ J. Nesselroad) Articles in Morris, J.A, Naour, P.J., Williamson R.J. ed. "Transitions: Bridging the Centuries, A Guidebook and Reading for First-Year Seminar." Acton, MA: Tapestry Press Ltd. 2000, 2001
This lead to an invitation to talk to the classes. I did my first presentation in 1998. Now our Budget Manager, Tim Cross (also a CPA) assists me as we do as many as 15 presentations a year. The goal of the presentation is to let the students know how checking accounts and credit cards work so that they can make informed decisions about how to use them.
After I began the First Year presentations, a group of students in one of the residence halls asked if I could come talk to them about issues to consider after graduation. I went in with some notes, but ended up answering questions for over an hour. I took this and created a presentation to seniors. I've had some big crowds and some small crowds for this presentation. Part of the reason is that I'm asked to present in the Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall session works in the Career Services schedule, but seniors aren't thinking about this part of graduation, then. Still I'm glad to help get started with good information.
