Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting
October 24, 1999
In Attendance: Jack Boitano, Jeff Wilson, Mary Lou Caspers, Alan Gittis, Eric Wiertelak, Sarah T., Robert Glassman, Karen Parfitt, Dwight Nelson, Michelle Mynlieff, Michael Loose, Bill Pizzi and Larry Normansell.
A. Secretary's Report - Larry Normansell
-The minutes of the 1998 Executive Meeting were read and approved.
B. Treasurer's Report - Eric Wiertelak
-The financial and membership data were distributed.
-A change in the dues cycle was reported, it will now be April 15 - April 14.
-A motion made by Jack and seconded by Jeff to increase dues to $25 was defeated.
C. President-elect's report on travel award competition - Bill Pizzi
-Four students were approved for travel awards
-A discussion about why so few people applied followed. Since we had fairly good publicity, the reason was not clear.
D. Presentation of slate for new President-elect and councilors
-By affirmation all were selected.
E. President's report of 1998-1999 activities
-Attempts to develop FUN-sponsored events were discussed. Two of these included an event at next year's annual meeting in New Orleans, which could include a shourt course or symposium on teaching undergraduate neuroscience, and including FUN at the Eastern Psychological Association meeting held in Baltimore in 2000.
-Creating a list of potential sponsors for the travel award was discussed.
F. Miscellaneous items
-Organization of button sale in New Orleans.
-Jack B. will take on the task of assessing the progress on the Teaching Award.
-Thanks to Jeff Wilson for web page work.
-Thanks to Pam Scott-Johnson for the brochures and visit to NSF.
-Thanks to Jean Hardwick for the newsletter.

-Introductions
H. Construction of agenda for business meeting
-We decided to start having an expanded executive committee meeting early in the week and just having a minimal business meeting.
I. New Business
-The role of FUN was discussed.
-It should service graduate and post doc students in helping them to know how to teach undergraduates
-Also, FUN could potentially serve as potential recruiters for faculty in graduate programs looking for students.
-Jack Boitano volunteered to head up the effort to create an undergraduate neuroscience honorary.
-An attempt to get a FUN representative to have a permanent seat on the Executive Committee meeting of ANDP needs to be made.
-Jack proposed the exploration of the possibilities of writing a grant proposal to fund travel awards for under-represented minorities. This was approved.
-The need to talk to publishers about introductory undergraduate textbooks was discussed.
-Russell Johnson wants to be the archivist for FUN materials.
A. Report about ANDP
Alan reported that ANDP represents a national organization of graduate and post doc studies. Educating graduate students to teach in undergraduate institutions was discussed. The need to create solutions, programs and policy to shape the agenda was brought up and a pre-conference workshop is a possible way to do this.
B. Jack Boitano presented the results of the survey.
C. The formation of a neuroscience honorary was discussion.
D. Tim Cannon suggested having local schools create lab tours to be made available for students who attend the Neuroscience meeting.
E. Solicited help: conference planning
