PLANT LAB
- BIOLOGY 107 - Fall 2012
Danny Ingold - BSC 429
(Section 5)
Section 5 - Meets on Tuesdays & Thursdays and begins on 1 November.

Course
Learning Objectives:
Course
Leaning Objectives extend directly from the Biology Department's
Learning Goals. In particular, the learning objectives for this
course emphasize Biology Department Learning Goals 1, 3 & 4.
As a
result of successfully completing this course, students will:
*** Become
proficient in basic microscopy and be able to
prepare fresh plant tissues for microscopic observation.
*** Be able to distinguish among the
major plant
tissue systems, tissue types and cell types using fresh and prepared
plant specimens.
*** Be able to distinguish between plant roots, stems and
leaves through microscopic anatomical observation.
*** Be able to distinguish between the control and
experimental treatment in two plant experiments.
*** Learn the major stages of plant cellular respiration
and photosynthesis.
*** Learn the anatomy of a flower and be able to recognize
the major categories of fruits.
- This course consists
of 8 labs and
a final lab exam on the 9th meeting.
- A lab
quiz will be administerd at the beginning
of each lab (starting with the second lab).
- Each Student will by encouraged to make
drawings of at least three specimens per lab. These drawings, if
done with diligence, will result in adding 1-3 points to your final lab
grade.
- There
will be two lab quizzes during lab 8
(one at the beginning of lab and one at the end)
- No make
up labs are allowed. If you
miss a lab you must write a 3-paper (with
three citations independent of the manual) to make up the
points.
- If you
miss more than 1 lab, you will be encouraged
to drop the lab and take it again later (see below)
*** - If you miss more than
one lab, you should drop the class and take it (or another Bio.
107 section) during another semester (since you will have
missed
~1/4 of the entire lab .... or
more). You should make every effort not
to miss a lab; if you do, not only will you miss a quiz, but also the
information necessary to study for the next lab quiz.
*** - You should come to lab prepared (having carefully read
the lab that is to be conducted on that day). Occasionally I
include a test question or two on lab quizzes over lab
information you should
have read for the day.
*** - You must purchase the Biology 107 lab manual (Plant
Lab). They cost $10.00 and I will bring them on the first day of
lab (proceeds go to Beta Beta Beta Biological Honorary). Seven of
the 8 labs have an
accompanying
power point presentation associated with it. These presentations will
be made available in Blackboard.
Many of the
quiz
questions will be
practical in nature and come from web pictures, slides
etc... Therefore, it would be useful if you studied the powerpoint
slides
for each lab. We have 3 hours
designated to us for each lab. It
will
take us at least 2 1/2 hours
to complete each lab.
*** - On the last lab day, a final
comprehensive lab exam
(1/2
practical and 1/2 written) will be given. This exam will be worth 28
pts and will consist of 56 questions. Many of these
questions will come from information that I will present to you at the
beginning of each lab period. Therefore, you should make it a point to
take notes during each lab.
We will have a review for the final lab exam in the afternoon or early
evening on the day before the exam.

*** - Final

will be assigned entirely on the basis of the number of
points that you earn from the quizzes,
drawings and the final exam.
Grades will
be assigned according to the scale below:
