The Muskingum College Speech Communication and Theatre Department put on its first play of the year - "Waiting for Godot," by Samuel Beckett - last week in Layton Theatre.    This complex play involves twists and turns that happen to two main characters Vladimir and Estragon.

Seniors Blake Burgess and Chip Barr played these main roles. Junior Mary Girton played the child, and the cast was rounded out by two freshmen Christy Kaminski, who played Lucky and Sarah Anderson, who played the role of Pozzo.

Jerry Martin, Professor of Speech Communication and Theatre, directed the play. Ronald Lauck, Associate Professor of Speech Communication and Theatre, was in charge of all of the technical aspects of putting on the play, including designing the lights and the set.

The cast wasn't the only talent showcased in this play. There were many students behind the scenes, as well, helping Martin and Lauck with painting, lights and sound.

The play's language is just as complicated as its plot, and the actors had to think about the deep meaning of the play.

"I think that the play went well, and that we were all challenged by the meaning by it," Girton said. "We all got along very well. It was a laid back environment where we all could act like ourselves. Since we could all be ourselves we all become close to each other, which I think, showed in our performance because there was no tension between Dr. Martin and us."
