OHIO SAITAMA ENGLISH TEACHING PROGRAM

The OSET program is one of three educational exchange programs established in 1990 between Ohio and Saitama, a neighboring prefecture of Tokyo, Japan. It has been providing Ohioans with an opportunity to live and teach in Saitama for one to three years as an Assistant Language Instructor (ALI).

An ALI works in cooperation with Japanese teachers in junior high schools, and sometimes in high schools and elementary schools, assisting Japanese teachers with their English language instruction to Japanese students. All employment contracts are for one year (starting Aug. 1, 2003) and are offered by a municipality (city school district) directly to an individual. Pending the mutual agreement of both parties, the contracts are renewable for additional years. In fact, school districts desire ALIs who are willing to stay more than one year due to the fact that the first year is spent mostly in training.

Teaching certification is not required. Application deadline is Dec. 14. Check Career Services for qualifications and an application.
