Adib Dixon In midst of all the nervous feelings and anxiety surrounding Sept. 11, several seniors gathered in room 15 of Cambridge Hall for an orientation on how to write a resume. Becky Skeens, director of Career Services, opened with polite greetings before addressing the nine seniors. She deftly made her way in and out of the wooden rows, handing out samples of how a resume should look. Skeens, in a low voice barely audible over the buzz of nearby machinery, started with quick pointers on the practical reasons of a resume. She discussed what size the font should be between a 10 and a 12 and what type of paper the resume should be printed on a higher grade than regular printing paper before she delved into the realm of job and school experiences as well as honors and scholarships. Skeens used a sample resume to show the correct order these credentials should be listed, including:
May Chaney, a senior with a double major in mathematics and computer science in work, was one of the few who stayed. “I came here to improve my current resume writing skills,” she said as Skeens looked over her resume. Heather Frese, a senior and one of the three editors of “First Circle” magazine, said she needed help in beginning her resume. “I would have been lost without this class,” she said. Although the lack of attendance was noticeable, Skeens said she was satisfied with the group size and their ability. “I'm not surprised," she said. "We have a series of these workshops and it’s easier to get through to the students when there in small groups.”
